Nursing Retention Specialist

Job Description:

Assist students to facilitate their success in reaching their goals to become a nurse. Meet with students individually and in groups to support them as they clarify, and review concepts taught in lecture, lab and clinical experiences. Track data related to the number of referrals, remedial activities, and academic outcomes of students referred by their faculty member. This person will also be responsible for teaching 4-6 contact hours of theory/academic year as directed by the chairperson.

Essential Functions:

* Provides remediation and tutoring sessions for students who are enrolled in any course housed within the nursing department.
* Offers success seminars each semester for students enrolled in any program or certificate housed within the nursing department.
* Collaborates with faculty to prepare final semester students of the nursing programs to successfully complete the licensure examination.
* Remains current in resource materials that impact success in nursing education.
* Maintains, updates, and shares a collection of learning materials with students and faculty.
* Prepares and reports data, including referrals, remedial activities, and academic outcomes of students referred by their faculty member.
* Works closely with faculty to ensure each student receives academic and other support to provide optimal opportunity for success.
* Encourages and assists students to utilize the resources available for academic improvement within Owens Community College, such as the library, practice skills laboratory, student services, and blackboard shells.
* Serves on Nursing's testing or curriculum committee.
* Dedicates ten to fifteen hours per week providing instruction in four to six contact hours/academic year as assigned by the department chair.
* Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

* Knowledge of the resources available to the nursing students on the Owens Community College campuses.
* Knowledge of NCLEX test plans for both the RN and PN students.
* Knowledge of the resources available via the web for student's success.
* Knowledge of the nursing programs curriculum plans and curriculum mapping.
* Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with students, faculty & staff regarding concerns related to the nursing courses.
* Ability to use computer technology/resources while teaching and remediating students.
* Ability to communicate/instruct effectively in the classroom setting.
* Ability to multitask.
* Ability to provide students clear and effective feedback for success in the nursing programs.
* Ability to have a professional demeanor and the ability to help the students make positive decisions for their success in the nursing program.

Minimum Requirements:

* Completion of an approved registered nursing education program. Experience for at least two years in the practice of nursing as a registered nurse.
* Current, valid licensure as a registered nurse in Ohio.
* If the individual does not possess a Bachelor of Science in nursing degree, the master's or other academic degree, including, but not limited to a Ph.D., shall be in nursing.
* If the individual possesses a Bachelor of Science in nursing degree, the master's degree may be, but is not required to be, in nursing.
