Speech/Language Pathologist

REQUIREMENTS:

Education Level: Meet and maintain licensure and certification requirements as established by the State of South Dakota. Master's degree in Speech Pathology, M.A., CCC preferred.

Experience Desired: Successful practicum/internship preferably in public school setting. Have knowledge of special education processes, evaluations, and eligibility requirements.

Other Requirements: Demonstrated ability to build interpersonal relationships and establish positive rapport with students, families, and colleagues. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated skills in human relations, leadership and conflict management. Demonstrated technology competency in word processing, spread sheets, and data bases.

Physical Requirements: Hand-eye, mind-eye coordination. Constant hearing; intermittent speaking, standing, walking and writing. Frequent carrying, keyboarding, and other repetitive motions.

BASIC FUNCTION/PURPOSE Provide comprehensive speech/language therapy services to

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:

Identify and evaluate students in need of speech and/or language intervention. Students may be identified through screening or parent/teacher referral.

Make medical referrals for voice or other organic problems prior to intervention.

Consult with school staff to adequately meet the needs of the child in the classroom.

Assist parents in meeting the needs of the child.

Provide direct intervention which may include articulation training, language development, speech fluency, voice therapy, or other areas of communication.

Participate in the development and/or implementation of an individual education program for each identified student.

Establish a climate of courtesy and respect that promotes the orderly behavior of all students and establishes and maintains positive rapport.

Maintain student records regarding the referral, evaluation, and placement process in compliance with district, state, and federal requirements.

Participate in parent conferences and communicate with parents on a routine basis, keeping them well informed about their child's progress.

Utilize therapy techniques consistent with the research on characteristics of effective speech/language therapy.

Work collaboratively with parents, staff, administrators, and outside agencies.

Participate in ongoing professional growth activities.

Attend building and departmental staff meetings.

Monitor and comply with federal, state, and district policies and procedures.

Maintain the confidentiality of students and their families.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Climatic Environment - Some district classrooms and work areas are not climate controlled and are subject to extremes of temperature and humidity.

Hazards - For some buildings, exposure to communicable diseases may be a potential hazard. In science labs, there could be exposure to chemicals and fumes. Equipment that supports classroom instruction could be potentially hazardous under certain conditions.

Work Year - This position is for a contract year.
