GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The incumbent displays a high degree of initiative and independent judgement while serving as a senior biomedical equipment and applications expert on project teams to provide expertise and leadership under the general direction of the Principal Investigator of the MD PnP Program (Medical Device Interoperability & Cybersecurity Program). Incumbent develops investigative techniques for novel medical interoperability technologies and establishes methods, procedures, and processes, to assess and assure the safety and performance of interoperable, distributed, medical systems developed in our lab or commercially. Working with clinical collaborators, the incumbent provides input and assistance to the Principal Investigator on definition, development, and execution of research projects in the medical device domain with a focus on Smart and Autonomous Medical Systems (SaAMS). Works with other team members to deploy, configure, and maintain laboratory medical equipment and systems.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Plays an independent and proactive role supporting team leadership in identifying research opportunities, defining research projects/proposals, selecting candidate technical solutions and research methods, and managing the execution of research projects in the medical device interoperability domain.
* Works closely with PI and program manager to develop program strategy, technical direction, and plans for long-term sustainability.
* Leads and supports MD PnP in-person, virtual, and hybrid small and large-scale project demonstrations.
* Monitors the progress of research projects and make recommendations to team leadership on research methods and improvements to ensure the success of research projects.
* Suggests and implements strategies for management of biomedical technology in the MD PnP Interoperability & Cybersecurity Lab.
* Communicates with MD PnP stakeholders to document and assure correct understanding and achievement of clinical and technical requirements of medical equipment and connected/interoperable technologies; and to identify and resolve technical issues.
* Works with team members to install, deploy, maintain (including preventive maintenance), repair, calibrate, and dispose of MD PnP lab devices and systems.
* Provides technical support and advice to users of MD PnP-developed tools on-site or remotely.
* Participates in standards development activities from AAMI, IEC, ISO, UL, and similar organizations on behalf of the MD PnP program, as appropriate.
* Publishes articles in academic and industrial journals and conferences to disseminate research findings and project outcomes.
* Mentors students and junior engineers in operating, managing, designing, or researching medical device and medical device informatics technologies and methods.
* Supports MD PnP collaborative community by contributing expertise to relevant projects and fostering collaborative use of laboratory facilities and services.
* Plans the allocation of resources and the distribution of work to subordinates and develops project plans for subordinates.
* Manages other biomedical engineers and support staff including recommendation for promotion or reassignment of subordinates; makes formal appraisals of their performance and determines their training needs.
* Performs other functions as assigned by MD PnP Leadership.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

* Experience with medical device/instrumentation development and innovation.
* Ability to independently diagnose and solve technical and/or system problems of moderate-to-high complexity.
* Mastery of electronic, mechanical and/or computational engineering design principles, such that new technologies and protocols can be easily incorporated into skillset.
* Bedside medical equipment integration/networking configuration expertise.
* High level of computer literacy, including open-source software development, database management, and the use of graphical, statistical, and engineering applications.
* Strong organizational and leadership skills, particularly in management of research projects and technical personnel.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, particularly to direct a research team with disparate expertise and coordinate with geographically distributed collaborators. Must possess expertise in technical writing, technical presentation, and teaching. Must appear presentable in webcast.
* Experience in definition, execution, and management of academic research projects.
* Strong history of research accomplishments including publications and successful completion of research projects.
* Experience with consensus standards development.

Desired:

* Experience with adopting, applying, or developing AI/Machine Learning methods to facilitate research.

EDUCATION:

* PhD in an in an engineering discipline required, with biomedical engineering highly preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

* 5 years of professional experience in an environment related to medical devices, clinical or biomedical research, or healthcare delivery. Experience with independently executing or leading biomedical research or clinical studies involving biomedical test and measurement is highly desired. Experience with medical device and technology verification using clinical scenario driven test methods (including simulation) is preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

* May have supervisory responsibility for junior engineers, including temporary interns and visiting students working on specific projects.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

* Works in a laboratory setting with occasional exposure to noise and dust, as well as exposure to electrical and other hazards.
