Duties As a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT) (TITLE 32), WG-3806-5/8/10, you will accomplish the inspection, repair, modification, installation and troubleshooting of sheet metal, fiberglass, bonded honeycomb and other structural materials and components as well as treatment (i.e., mechanical and chemical), and painting of missiles, aircraft powered and nonpowered Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE), and monitoring aircraft and equipment washing. Major Duties - This is NOT an all-inclusive list: * Independently inspect aircraft and determine the nature and extent of repairs to be made, using applicable technical orders as guidelines. * Inspect damage or deterioration and determine repair or replacement of plastic, fiberglass, composites, bonded structures, and bonded honeycomb assemblies using powered and nonpowered tools and equipment. * Prepare for and participate in various types of readiness evaluations such as MEI, ORI, IG and UE inspections mobility and command support exercises. * Conduct training on proper methods and procedures of wash rack operations. * Assist in training of drill status guard members and in maintenance of publication files of applicable technical orders, regulations, manuals and local directives. * Manufacture and ensure that metal tubing, conduits and cables are fabricated and tested in accordance with drawings and specifications. * Work from blueprints, technical orders diagrams, and work orders. * Identify, blend, store, control, and dispose of hazardous materials such as acids, caustics, alcohols, solvents, cleaners, primers and surface coatings used for corrosion removal, treatment and protection in accordance with applicable directives. * Work directly on the aircraft and its components, fulfilling such tasks as removal, repair, modification and installation of parts and assemblies, such as frames, stringers, longerons, bulkheads, beams, ribs, spars, skin, cowling, brackets, faring, access doors, panels and other related items. * Repair cracks in aircraft skin. * Troubleshoot aircraft structural repair situations in such areas as fuselage, tails, wings, cowlings, and stabilizers. * Align and balance component structures and airframe using precision measuring instruments and levels. * Identify metal corrosion. * Remove corrosion by mechanical and chemical procedures to include use of portable powered (electric and pneumatic) sanders, buffers, brushes, bead blasters, vacuum cleaners, scrapers, grinders, acids, caustics, solvents, alcohols and other agents used in corrosion control processes. * Apply protective coatings, markings, and decals after proper removal of corrosion and treatment of metals. Requirements Conditions of Employment * NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED. Qualifications AREA OF CONSIDERATION: The areas of considerations for this position, Title 32 Excepted Service (32 U.S. Code 709), will be in the following manner and sequence: * The FIRST area of consideration for this position will be all excepted permanent and indefinite temporary technicians within the ILNG. Military Grades: Enlisted Only - Minimum Rank E5 - Maximum Rank E6 GENERAL EXPERIENCE : MUST possess experience or training that has provided the ability to plan, manufacture, and install cylindrical, square, or rectangular-shaped objects that have easily constructed fastenings such as single and double-hem edges and single, double or grooved seams. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE : WG-10 Level - MUST possess specialized experience or training in planning, layout, and construction skills to manufacture items and systems with dovetailed seams, set-in-bottom seams, burred-bottom seams, or wired or lock seams; experience using more complicated shop tools and equipment; experience in using metals including stainless steel, copper sheet, magnesium, honeycomb material and alloys; and experience demonstrating the use of more complicated mathematical calculations and complicated measuring instruments. WG-08 Level - MUST possess specialized experience or training planning, manufacturing, and installing cylindrical, square, or rectangular-shaped objects that have easily constructed fastening; experience cutting and forming by using basic hand and powered tools such as hammers, chisels, hand snips, band and circle saws, squaring shears, seamers, bar folders, breaks, and stakes; experience assembling parts by seaming, bolting, screwing, riveting, tacking, spot-welding, or soldering; and experience demonstrating a basic understanding of using measuring instruments. WG-05 Level - MUST possess specialized experience or training which demonstrates the ability to use common hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments and make repetitive repairs; basic knowledge of the type of work performed by the occupational series; and the ability to provide assistance to the journeyman by performing the simpler and routine duties of the trade. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
