What you'll do...

Join the Search and BuyBox algorithm team at Walmart, where we are pioneering solutions to some of the most challenging problems in e-commerce. Every time a user types in a query, engages with an item on our website or mobile apps, or browses through product categories, our advanced algorithms spring into action.

We are the driving force behind both the Search and BuyBox systems. Our Search system mines billions of search queries and hundreds of millions of products to find the most relevant products for our customers, while our BuyBox system is the offer ranking engine that optimizes user experience by presenting the best possible offers from various sellers. Our aim is not only to assist customers in their buying decisions but also to foster a competitive and fair marketplace for our sellers. By leveraging data from hundreds of millions of user-product interactions, we surface the most competitive offers that deliver optimum value to our customers and find the most relevant products for them.

As a part of our team, you will solve intriguing problems in the domains of machine learning, information retrieval and ranking, natural language processing, and computer vision. The algorithms you develop will champion customer needs, surface reliable offers, align with customer intents across multiple platforms and modalities (voice, text, image, etc.), and understand their preferences, implicitly or explicitly. Your work will have a direct impact on millions of customers and contribute significantly to the strategic goals of the world's leading enterprise.

If you have a passion for machine learning and are driven by innovation, we want to hear from you. Join our team and be part of this exciting journey.

About Team:
Our team is at the forefront of e-commerce innovation, driving the performance and functionality of both the Search and BuyBox systems at Walmart. We employ advanced machine learning techniques to rank offers from various sellers, surface the most relevant products to our customers based on their search queries, and ensure the best possible deal is presented to customers in the BuyBox. Our work spans across Walmart.com and our mobile apps, influencing the shopping experience of millions of customers daily. We work closely with other teams to understand user behavior, seller offerings, and market dynamics. Our focus areas include offer ranking, seller performance, search personalization, information retrieval and ranking, and general feature development within the Search and BuyBox systems.

What you'll do:

  • Building, validating, testing, and deploying predictive models using machine learning techniques to understand, explain, or predict customer and seller behavior, and solve a variety of business and engineering problems.
  • Identifying, collecting, and exploring the right data used for predictive modeling and algorithm development, particularly related to offer ranking, product relevancy, and seller performance.
  • Performing and leading developments using machine learning techniques in one or more of the key areas like information retrieval and ranking, natural language processing, computer vision, entity recognition, and product classification.
  • Collaborating with various teams to understand the impact of Search and BuyBox on customer behavior and overall business performance, and continuously improving the systems to meet strategic business goals.
What you'll bring:
  • 3+ years of work and research experience in the machine learning field, coupled with a deep understanding of machine learning and an interest in applying it at scale.
  • Experience with data cleaning, preparation, and featurization and selection techniques.
  • Experience in working with large datasets to solve problems.
  • Experience with deep learning libraries such as TensorFlow and/or PyTorch is highly desirable, as is experience with Spark and/or Hadoop.
  • Hands-on experience with Python, Java or Scala, and the ability to write reusable and efficient code to automate machine learning pipelines and data processes.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • The ability to handle multiple concurrent projects while working independently and in teams.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • A Ph.D. or M.S. in Computer Science, Statistics, Artificial Intelligence, Operations Research, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Computational Linguistics, or related fields.
