We are seeking candidates for the position of Engineer I (1013) - Bridges & Buildings - Major Projects in the B&B/Project Development.

Job Grade: SAM 36

Starting Salary: $69,628.00

Additional $5,000 salary increase for having a Pennsylvania PE License.

OVERALL DESCRIPTION

Two Engineer I positions in Major Projects will support Trolley Modernization -- SEPTA's program to transform the nation's largest trolley network into an accessible, fast, and easy-to-use system. Trolley Modernization features new, accessible vehicles that hold more passengers; new on-street stations that are fully accessible; and infrastructure and operational improvements to make service faster and more reliable.

In the immediate future, the Engineer I positions will be assigned to the design and construction of the Heavy Maintenance Facility for the new vehicles, the Route 36 / T5 corridor improvements, a City to Suburban Track Connector to allow modern trolley vehicles access from the Suburban routes to the new maintenance facility, bridge rehabilitations to accommodate the heavier vehicles, an End of Line improvement on the Route 101 / D1 in Media, and additional projects.

This position is responsible for undertaking engineering assignments that are considered to be of "basic complexity" in size and scope. This position is further responsible to provide technical support and direction for engineering activities including the definition and coordination for design review and implementation, program/project development and consulting, and continuous improvement approaches to ensure activities are consistent with SEPTA mission values and goals.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Consults with senior level engineer/supervision-quality assurance in project definition.
  • Exercises good judgment in application of basic engineering and quality assurance principles.
  • Generates written memoranda, technical reports, specifications, audits, etc. in a professional manner.
  • Assists in the preparation of budgets for proposed work to be accomplished through SEPTA force account labor or third party contractors.
  • Interfaces with municipal government/regulating agencies as well as other railroads and transit properties.
  • Complies with all Authority and departmental safety and security policies and procedures as well as all applicable job safety responsibilities. Reports any safety concerns, compromises or hazards affecting operations, the public, self and/or other employees. Responsible for personal safety and is encouraged to promote the safety of others.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Facilities, Engineering and Construction Disciplines
  • Assists in Engineering design and analysis in assigned field (i.e. Architecture, CE, ME, EE, Structural, Track, and C&S).
  • Assists in investigations/field surveys.
  • Be aware of and practice standards as applicable to assigned field.
  • Reviews drawings for accuracy and completeness coordinating with other specialty groups within the department where necessary/advisable.
  • Assists in preliminary planning layouts/sketches where dictated by assigned task/project.
Program Management and Construction Engineering Disciplines
  • Document for record all major design concepts, approaches and agreements made with any and all parties involved in the project.
  • Assists Project Engineering with preparation of reports relating to progress of the work and the Contractor's compliance with progress schedule, shop drawings, and other submittals.
  • Assists Project Engineer in project management tasks.
  • Maintains a diary or log book to record Contractor manpower and hours on the job site; weather conditions; data relative to work directive changes, change orders or, changed conditions; list of job site visitors, daily activities, decisions, and observations in general.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • B. S. Degree in Engineering is required.
  • Working knowledge of Autocad version 14 or higher required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Excellent PC skills including Microsoft Office applications required.
  • May work nights and weekends as required.
