Responsibilities:

The Electrical / Instrumentation (E/I) Designer is responsible for conceptualizing and detailing systems and components essential to industrial plant projects. They collaborate closely with Engineers and Senior Designers to translate conceptual designs into detailed engineering drawings suitable for procurement, construction, and analysis purposes.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Transform conceptual designs and sketches into fully engineered drawings using AutoCAD, specifically focusing on Electrical and Instrumentation (E/I) aspects for Midrex plant engineering.
  • Ensure E/I drawings align with initial concepts and design sketches through meticulous checking and validation.
  • Provide input to Engineers for optimizing designs to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Prepare requisitions, quotations, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Conduct basic calculations for equipment and systems.
  • Support Aftermarket, Inspections, & Purchasing departments by reviewing vendor submittals and conducting on-site inspections of electrical and instrumentation equipment.
  • Travel domestically and internationally as required for departmental, project, and corporate activities, including field assignments for construction, commissioning, and startup phases.
  • Collaborate effectively across departments to achieve consensus and deliver solutions that benefit all stakeholders.

Skills/Abilities: Required:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Expertise in AutoCAD software and related Autodesk products.
  • Strong technical writing and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage deadlines and deliverables with minimal supervision.
  • Experience in supervising field erection activities and providing technical support for equipment installation in the Direct Reduction and/or steel industry.
  • Willingness to travel extensively to various job sites globally.

Preferred:

  • Previous international travel experience.
  • Background in industrial plant operations.
  • Familiarity with hazardous area E&I system design conforming to NEC/NFPA and local codes.
  • Knowledge of bulk items design such as cable trays, conduits, lighting, and grounding specifications using Microsoft Excel.

Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree in electrical or instrumentation discipline; or a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in an industrial or technical environment. Prior experience in the steel industry is advantageous.

Travel Requirements:

  • Average yearly travel of 10% to 25% internationally and domestically, varying based on project demands. Travel can exceed 50% during the startup and commissioning phase typically in the third year of a project.

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended periods of desk work involving computer use.
  • Ability to navigate project sites, including climbing ladders or stairs when necessary.
