Editor, C&EN Print Magazine (Part-time)Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN) is seeking a part time visionary Editor, C&EN Print Magazine, to lead the strategy, creation, and execution of the print edition of Chemical & Engineering News, an award-winning magazine that for more than a century has been an editorial beacon of the American Chemical Society's Publications group. The Editor, C&EN Print Magazine will collaborate with C&EN's team of editors, writers, and designers to create and publish a regularly scheduled print edition of C&EN magazine, with the goal of expanding readers' knowledge, enhancing user engagement, and promoting content sharing, while maintaining C&EN's strong tradition of editorial excellence.The Editor, C&EN Print Magazine will collaborate with C&EN's senior management and ACS stakeholders to create a strategic plan for C&EN's print magazine's ongoing content offerings, execute on that plan with editorial quality, creativity, ROI, and operational efficiency. The Editor, C&EN Print Magazine role requires editorial and subject-matter expertise, experience in creating a print magazine geared for an audience which is predominantly but not exclusively academic. We also value knowledge of layout and design, and subject expertise to deliver a compelling print edition on a regular basis that resonates with C&EN's diverse audiences and aligns with C&EN's and ACS's brand's mission and values. The ideal candidate will combine strong leadership skills, journalistic excellence, and magazine publication expertise to help shape the future of C&EN's print publishing strategy and execution.Responsibilities:Strategy Develop and execute C&EN's vision for a monthly print magazine geared towards the global chemistry enterprise covering a suite of topics related to chemistry as well as offering help and advice on careers and management in the chemistry arena.Have oversight over all aspects of C&EN print magazine's creation, in collaboration with colleagues, including around design and delivery, to help further C&EN's goals and ensure the utmost editorial quality.Collaborate with C&EN's writers and editors in selecting and curating timely, compelling, and accurate content for the magazine that drives users to deep engagement and sharing C&EN content with their community.Work closely with C&EN's media groups and ACS stakeholders, including editorial, audience development, product design, Ad Sales, and Membership, to align the editorial content approach of the print editions with C&EN's and ACS's brand and mission goals.Continually monitor usage data and refine C&EN's print magazine to reflect developing trends in the chemistry arena, magazine publishing, and feedback from readers. Continually strive to adapt the print editions to reflect audience needs, market trends, and data insights.Partner with other areas of the ACS to gauge how C&EN's print editions can be leveraged to help advance their goals.Management Develop a clear set of goals and milestones for the print editions, including the magazine's subscriber and unsubscribe rates, Membership conversion, reader engagement, citations, and content sharing.Oversee the print edition's budget in collaboration with the Production Supervisor, monitoring ongoing costs and ensuring the efficient allocation of resources.Analyze and report relevant metrics to ACS stakeholders and recommend actions to improve the print magazine's performance against goals.Work with C&EN's technology groups to optimize production technology and distribution tools, and coordinate with other C&EN editorial publishing platforms such as the website, newsletters, and social media.Required Skills, Experience and Education:Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related fieldSeven or more years' experience in journalism, editorial leadership, and print platform content strategy.Demonstrated ability to collaborate with an editorial team, fostering a culture of innovation and editorial excellence.Experience creating and curating magazine content for a seasoned, academically oriented audienceExperience with magazine publishing platforms (e.g., K4 or similar product) and analytics tools for measuring reader engagement.Exceptional news judgment, writing, editing, and storytelling abilities.Background in the sciences, particularly chemistryPassion for staying on top of industry trends, and exploring new ways to engage audiences via technology and designStrong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.Excellent written and verbal communications capabilities and presentation skillsThis role can be based in our Washington, D.C. or Columbus, OH office.
