Prototype Specialist

SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS:
Responsible for assembly of all prototype motors using component drawings, assembly drawings, shop travelers, outline drawings, process sheets and informal and red line communications. The assembly of prototypes will occur outside of a normal production setting and the specialist will use an array of bench assembly methods including use of hand tools, cutting tools, ovens, press, and crane systems. The Prototyping Specialist will be required to work on new assembly techniques on electric motor components.
The Prototyping Specialist must inspect their own work to ensure the prototype meets the specifications and quality requirements. Experience with complex mechanical and electrical assembly is required.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assembly of variety of prototype electric motors using various methods that may include: press fitting, shrink fitting, fasteners and hand tool assembly, manual shaping/forming, and other required methods.
Knowledge of electric motor windings and permanent magnet motors.
Experience hand winding armatures of various shapes and sizes using engineering wiring diagrams.
Experience using various soldering methods, i.e.-soldering iron, resistance soldering, propane torch. etc.
Experience supporting engineering, documenting build methods, defect issues, and being creative in solving build issues.
Build or modify prototypes including inspection and measurement of component parts using metrology equipment.
Troubleshoot any problems during and after assembly process of prototypes.
Coordinate production of sub-assemblies and machined components with other functional areas and machine shop.
Sufficiently describe or sketch tools/jigs/fixtures to mechanical engineer
Maintain accurate inventory of prototype components
Responsible for safe use and storage of tools, fixtures, and test equipment
Determine component requirements, order required materials, expedite and follow-up on purchase orders
Maintain detailed and complete prototype records; scan and store electronic records per defined standards
TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION, CANDIDATE MUST:
Have 5+ years of experience of mechanical assembly and electrical troubleshooting in a manufacturing environment.
Must have the ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and motor winding diagrams.
Must have experience using various electrical test methods utilizing Multimeters, Hipotenial testers, Resistance testers, and Surge testers.
Must have the ability to use dimensional metrology equipment which include; micrometers, calipers, dial gauges, height gages, and various other forms of inspection.
Must have experience performing various electrical connections and proper terminating techniques and be familiar with all associated tooling required for this process.
Must have experience with permanent magnet motor assemblies.
Must have knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, and managing files and records of prototype builds
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES NECESSARY:
Must be able to work to mechanical drawings, work instruction, and verbal instructions.
Knowledge in use of soldering tools and techniques, various hand tools, and benchtop winding equipment.
Must be available to work overtime as deemed necessary by business needs
Good written and verbal communication skills
Requires the use of judgment to plan, perform, and make decisions as to the sequence of setups, operations, and processes within the limitations of recognized or standard methods
Self-motivated and capable of completing tasks without supervision
Must be organized and detail oriented
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
2 Year degree in Mechanical or similar technical curriculum preferred
5+ years of experience in mechanical assembly, electrical troubleshooting in a manufacturing setting.
