Senior Payroll Specialist

Our client in North County San Diego is seeking an experienced Senior Payroll Specialist to join their team on a direct-hire basis. Candidates experienced processing payroll for a smaller to mid-sized company are encouraged to apply. Seeking multi-state payroll experience alongside strong Excel skills. The ability to work onsite in Carlsbad 3 days per week is a requirement:


Compensation: $95k to $110k plus bonus and equity.

Please note this range is an estimate and actual pay may vary based on qualifications and experience.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Own payroll from start to finish (200 EEs, multi-state, 30-35 states) and the company is hiring people all of the time.
  • About 50% of the team is in sales, so this position will require monthly and quarterly pay-out on commissions. This person but be able to review to ensure all looks right but does not require doing the actual commission calculations.
  • Work independently to troubleshoot issues in the system (validate items, and work with Paycor on solutions to implement going forward) must be able to think through problems, work through issues, and through to solutions.
  • Monitor PTO in the systems, administer LOA (putting EE's LOA in system, monitoring how they accrue.
  • Make sure benefits deductions are correct.
  • Review benefits billings to ensure they are accurate.
  • Handles the accounting side of payroll: recurring journal entries for accrued PTO, accrued benefits, etc. **Note the company is willing to teach this piece.
  • Help with 401k, workers comp audits, tax filings.


Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree and 6 years of payroll experience OR 8+ years of professional payroll experience in lieu of a degree is required.
  • Full-cycle, multi-state payroll is required.
  • Paycor HRIS system experience is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll including gross-to-net-calculation, disposable earnings for garnishments, payroll tax regulations, pre-post tax benefit deductions, fringe benefits, equity, and their impact to net pay.
  • CPP designation is a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office: strong Excel skills is required - experience with Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP, Sum-If, XLOOKUP, etc.
  • Must be self-motivated, organized, plus embrace the change and uncertainty that comes working in a start-up environment.
