Position Overview

As members of the comprehensive sports medicine program, athletic trainers are responsible for the prevention, evaluation, treatment, management and overall rehabilitation of student athletes and their sports-related injuries.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities


Knowledge and Skills of

  • Treats athletic injuries with protection, rest, ice, compression, evaluation, support, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, cold/heat and hydrotherapy as needed or prescribed with the availability of modalities
  • Maintains a professional, organized, sanitary high school training room/facility
  • Arranges for physical exams at the site, when directed by Site Administration
  • Monitors and managers concussion follow-up for affected athletes
  • Assesses and reports the progress of recovering athletes to Coaches and physicians
  • Communicates and advises athletes, Coaches, and parents on the care and prevention of athletic injuries
  • Attends seasonal Coaches’ and parent meetings
  • Consults with Coaches on athletic injury prevention, basic first Aid and follow-up injury and prevention
  • Administers First Aid to address injuries, controls bleeding, performs CPR, and provides basic splinting for fracture/dislocation immobilization to injured athletes, cheerleaders, dance members, both prior to practice or games and as events happen. Includes injury and emergency care for visiting team athletes, if requested by officials and/or Coach
  • Covers sporting events as scheduled by Administration and Athletic Director

Ability to

  • Develop, oversee, and implement effective programs
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt and effective course of action within designated areas of responsibility

Qualifications & Skills

  • BA or BS degree in Anatomy, Kinesiology, and Physiology, Nutrition or similar field from an accredited college/university is desirable; or a combination of experience, training, and/or education to demonstrate proficiency in the knowledge and abilities listed in Sports Medicine or similar field.
  • One year of certification and experience required, 3-4 years of experience in athletic training preferred
  • Experience in injury prevention, clinical evaluation, immediate care, treatment rehabilitation and reconditioning, organization, administration, and professional responsibility, as outlined by BOC
  • ATC Certified by Board of Certification (BOC) and member in good standing with National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA)
  • Valid certification in First Aid and CPR/BLS
  • Valid New York Driver’s License and appropriate driving record

Working conditions

Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. Outdoor and indoor working environments; subject to uneven walking surfaces, concrete surface in the work areas, grease/oil, solvents, and detergents. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Bending at the waist to tape and lift; heavy lifting and carrying; standing and walking for extended periods of time; kneeling or crouching to assist students; reaching overhead, above shoulders, and horizontally; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate athletic equipment and tape students. Frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move equipment with up to 50 pounds of force. Close proximity hearing and clarity of vision near and far with varying distance focus/refocus ability are necessary for these tasks. This job requires a very articulate communicator, as so many of the tasks involve direct conversation with medical personnel, staff members, students, and the public. Read and write with speed and accuracy. Must comprehend visual and auditory input given by others. Short and long term memory recall ability is required in all tasks. Must be a tactful and efficient worker toward all whom he/she comes in contact with.

Supervision Exercised

Educates and supervises student athletes and student workers in use of rehab equipment and exercises, counseling student athletes and evaluating their conditions and progress.
