Job Overview:

The Technical Writer is part of the Product Management group and is responsible to author content for various documents which are needed to support our software products. This includes manuals, guides, cut sheets, knowledge base, FAQ’s and more in various formats, including web based, PDF, Word, and others. The Technical Writer must have a strong command of the English language and should be well versed in modern tooling that is used for authoring and publishing version controlled content. The Sr. Technical writer should also be capable of mentoring Jr. writers and leading the editing and revision process.


Job Functions:

  • Author web based, topic oriented content that is easily consumable and understandable by all authorized users, based on roles and personas.
  • Under the guidance of the group Manager, follow industry best practices around the design, layout, and user experience for our online and printed content.
  • Work with the writing team to drive a ‘single voice’ approach to our writing, through consistency, uniformity and the proper use of our glossary and terms.
  • Engage regularly with the Product Owners and other SMEs to ensure a full and clear understanding of the software requirements, features and system capabilities that need to be documented.
  • Participate in the daily and weekly Scrum team activities to understand the sprint and release goals, prioritization of features and coordination of deliverables.
  • Author content in Madcap Flare, using the Bastian approved style guides, templates, images, and other artifacts to properly represent software product capabilities.
  • Leverage Madcap Central to assign and manage the documentation review process with the Product Owners and other key stakeholders as needed, capturing feedback, and incorporating updates as part of the workflow.
  • Use conditioning and tagging to drive single sourcing of content whenever possible, in an effort to drive consistency and flexibility in support of multiple target outputs.
  • Relentlessly strive for a culture of high quality by supporting Product Management and other team resources in the editing and revision process.
  • Work with UX and Development teams to map contextual help topics to product UIs for a seamless “online help” experience for our customers.
  • Work with CloudOps and DevOps to implement the CI/CD of our product documentation into our releases (version-less or otherwise).
  • Support output targets for all necessary product documentation, including but not limited to: online help, user guides, configuration guides, interface specs, knowledge base, cut-sheets, release notes, FAQs.
  • Assist and collaborate with other Technical Writer resources to drive a “One Bastian” mindset on all of our deliverables based on collective sprint and release goals.
  • Use best practices to incorporate text, images, diagrams, tables, and other artifacts to create clear and concise product documentation.
  • Use a topic based authoring approach for easy searchability, navigation and categorization of our product documentation.
  • Always convey content in an intuitive and easy to understand manner.

Travel Requirements:

  • 15% overnight travel (Travel expenses paid by Bastian Solutions)


Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in logistics/supply chain or related industry.
  • Strong acumen for problem solving.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good time management skills with an ability to handle competing priorities.
  • Ability to effectively interface with customers.
  • Experience with cross-functional teams, including engineering, sales, and Product Management.
  • In depth experience with material handling systems and/or warehouse management systems.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of small to medium size groups.
  • Detail oriented in nature.
  • Experience using Jira or Azure DevOps for software development.
  • Experience with Lucid, Miro or other planning and collaboration tools.
  • Experience in XML DITA or mark-down language.
  • Experience in other technical writing tools beyond Flare.


Required Qualifications :

  • Minimum 2 years of experience using Madcap Flare.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience as a Technical Writer.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a software development organization.
  • Ability to understand and participate in technical discussions related to software development.
  • Well versed in software integration and deployment related topics and practices.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, or related field.
  • Strong grammar and proofing experience.
  • Experience working with teams.
