Research Coastal Engineer Position – Mid-career to Senior

  1. Education or experience with coastal structure responses, coastal flooding and surge, and wave hydrodynamics is required. This includes probabilities and statistics for interpreting coastal structure responses.
  2. Experience applying coastal structure response physics is required. This includes applying coastal structure response empirical equations and associated uncertainties, understanding physics within each equation, and interpreting and comparing alternative equations. Comfortable working with Coastal Engineering Manual (CEM), EurOtop manual, and peer-reviewed research articles.
  3. Candidate should have strong skills in applying foundational concepts of coastal physics and coastal storm probabilities and statistics including frequency analyses and stochastic methods.
  4. Experience and/or willingness to cross interdisciplinary specialties in the areas of: coastal structure responses, coastal storm hazards, civil engineering, programming, probability and statistics, machine learning, database management, and technical writing.
  5. Programming and software development skills: proficiency in MATLAB and/or Python is required. This includes evaluating large datasets and model results to identify potential issues and rapidly address issues.
  6. Familiar with basic GIS functions including editing attribute tables, re-projecting files, and creating images for reports is a plus.
  7. Ability to convey results concisely to federal and local sponsors through written reports and oral communication.
  8. Experience or willingness in project and/or task management; capable of performing functions as a Principal Investigator.
  9. PhD highly preferable; Master's degree or 3+ years of relevant work experience at a minimum.
  10. Related job titles include: Research Civil/Coastal/Risk Engineer or Research Physical Scientist
  11. Technical tasks consist of performing probabilistic coastal hazard analysis, probabilistic coastal structure response analysis, stochastic simulations, probabilistic modeling, technical writing, and communication.
