Coastal Engineering Researcher – Mid to Senior Level

  1. Educational Background: A solid foundation in coastal engineering principles, particularly in relation to coastal infrastructure responses, flood dynamics, and wave behavior is essential. Proficiency in statistical methods for analyzing coastal structure performance is required.
  2. Application of Physics: Demonstrated experience in applying the physics of coastal structures is necessary. This includes utilizing empirical equations and understanding their inherent uncertainties, as well as the ability to evaluate and compare various modeling approaches. Familiarity with the Coastal Engineering Manual (CEM), EurOtop guidelines, and relevant academic literature is advantageous.
  3. Statistical Analysis Skills: Candidates should possess strong capabilities in coastal physics and storm probability analysis, including expertise in frequency analysis and stochastic techniques.
  4. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Willingness to engage across various fields such as coastal structure analysis, storm hazard assessment, civil engineering, programming, statistical analysis, machine learning, database management, and technical documentation is expected.
  5. Programming Proficiency: Strong skills in programming and software development are required, particularly in MATLAB and/or Python. This includes the ability to analyze extensive datasets and model outputs to identify and resolve potential challenges efficiently.
  6. GIS Knowledge: Familiarity with basic Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tasks, such as editing attribute tables, re-projecting spatial data, and generating visual content for reports, is a plus.
  7. Communication Skills: The ability to effectively communicate findings to federal and local stakeholders through clear written reports and presentations is crucial.
  8. Project Management Experience: Experience or readiness to take on project management responsibilities, including serving as a Principal Investigator, is preferred.
  9. Educational Qualifications: A PhD is highly desirable; however, a Master's degree or a minimum of three years of relevant professional experience will also be considered.
  10. Related Positions: Similar roles may include Research Civil/Coastal/Risk Engineer or Research Physical Scientist.
  11. Technical Responsibilities: Key tasks involve conducting probabilistic analyses of coastal hazards, evaluating coastal structure responses, performing stochastic simulations, and engaging in technical writing and communication.
