Job Summary

The Access Advisor is a multi-faceted role that provides students with wrap-around services related to accessibility compliance, as well as holistic student support. This includes the review of documentation and the development, implementation, and support of accommodation plans. In addition, this role provides students information regarding the curricular requirements of academic majors, responds to questions or concerns from students, and provides current and accurate information regarding academic policies and procedures; working closely with academic departments and Academic Advisors. This position will also contribute to student access and retention efforts including proactive outreach and interventions and be a part of a student's Network of Care Team.

This individual will be dedicated to creating a positive, equitable, and inclusive experience for students with disabilities. Building and maintaining positive relationships with students, instructors, and community members is an essential component of this role.

Accommodation Support and Advising
  • Provides services in a cohort-based approach, building strong relationships through consistent communication and engagement.
  • Responsible for reviewing documentation/registration of students with disabilities. Establishes reasonable accommodations based on the assessment of primary, secondary, and tertiary student disability information through the lens of the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) and Section 504 Sub-part E of the Rehabilitation Act. Facilitates Intake Interviews in person and virtually (via live stream video) to register students with Accessibility Services. Assists, as appropriate, in decision-making in serving College Credit Plus partners. Understands legislation in providing college-appropriate services to high school students with disabilities enrolled in Columbus State courses.
  • Advocates for students and consults with faculty, staff, and adjuncts regarding reasonable accommodations and other considerations. Makes referrals to other campus resources as appropriate.
  • Proactively provides direct support services, in person, over the phone, and electronically. Partners with faculty and staff from other College departments to address student needs. Timely responds to email inquiries and/or follows up on additional items needed.
  • Provides academic/career planning and skills coaching while assisting in providing accessibility to students in collaboration with campus and community stakeholders. Guides students toward educational program options and careers that acknowledge their skills and aspirations, while supporting degree and/or goal completion.
  • Assists students experiencing academic difficulties to develop a plan of action to promote academic access and career success; providing interventions as needed.

Holistic Student Support
  • Uses college and department data to inform holistic support strategies to increase retention and improve the student experience and inform proactive outreach.
  • Maintains regular communication and working relationships with fellow advisors and other areas of the College, staying informed of activities, and working collaboratively to provide holistic support and achieve institutional priorities. Works with web resources, social media, and print materials to support academic and student support initiatives and assists with informational activities and events for the department and college.

Administrative
  • Completes, maintains, and utilizes required documentation (using technology, college systems and department-specific software) including intake paperwork and case notes, advisor notes, early alert, electronic case management tools, test results, attendance, status reports and other confidential student records to document support provided. Updates the Documentation Received Log and case notes in a timely manner. Distributes Letters of Accommodation to students upon request. Possesses a general understanding of how to utilize assistive technology software.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality as required in records and proceedings.

Culture of Respect
  • Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect and inclusion for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community.

OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manages multiple assignments of varying complexity while meeting Federal as well as internal regulations and procedures, with the ability to adapt to changing needs of the College and business partners. Regular attendance at department staff meetings and college-wide advisor meetings and trainings. Stays current on updated ADA accommodation regulations, academic policies, procedures, and curriculum information.
  • Hours may include working outside of a normal workweek schedule as needed to meet workload demands.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Two (2) years' progressive experience in accessibility work, or a closely related role.
  • State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).
  • *An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Knowledge of: standard practices within area of disability/accessibility services and advising practices in higher education setting.

Ability to: Appreciate diversity and work effectively with persons of varying cultures and backgrounds; develop and maintain positive and productive working relationships with associates, supervisors, job contacts, and general public; speak effectively to individuals and large groups; answer routine and complex inquiries in-person, by phone, by email, exhibit a pleasant telephone manner; work independently, demonstrating initiative and follow-through, as well as work as part of a larger team; organize and manage multiple tasks with close attention to detail; demonstrate flexibility; maintain confidential and sensitive information; maintain accurate and complete work records. Operate efficiently and effectively in both an in-person and virtual environment.

Skill in: verbal and written Communications; multitasking and project management; maintaining good public relations and excellent customer service; follow-up; problem solving; application of job-related software programs; general typing and administrative work; operating general office equipment.

The employee frequently sits for extended periods of time, stands, and walks. Employee converses verbally or manually with others in person and by telephone.
