SUMMARY: Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, performs a variety of duties to assist attorneys to whom assigned. Maintains positive contact with clients and observes confidentiality of client matters. Organizes and maintains case files, binders and other documents. Keeps accurate time records.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follows the ethical requirements as set forth by the Rules of Professional Conduct of the state.
  • Knowledge of the Federal Rules of Evidence.
  • Understands the general differences between litigation areas in federal versus state courts.
  • Establishes, organizes and maintains document indexes and lists.
  • Conducts research and locates cases, statutes, reports and information related to the matter.
  • Utilizes computerized case management systems and techniques when applicable.
  • Performs assigned legal research tasks using all available resources including libraries and computer data systems.
  • Summarizes deposition transcripts and medical records in an efficient manner, usually by dictating same.
  • Prepares complaints, motions, petitions, subpoenas.
  • Drafts interrogatories, answers to interrogatories and requests for production.
  • Trial preparation
  • Organizes and prepares files.
  • Assists in preparation of trial books.
  • Assists attorney at trial.
  • Gathers and prepares exhibits for trial.
  • Arranges for witness attendance at depositions, hearings and trials.
  • Ability to read, analyze and understand statutes, regulations and cases.
  • Ability to write and check citations; shepardizing and research case law and statutes.
  • Provide hands-on support and case management which includes loading and/or processing of native data, conversion and ingestion of load files, manipulation and alteration of databases and fields, conversion of data formats and images, searching and categorization of data.
  • Creates, updates, and maintains eDiscovery databases, including hosted solutions (ie. Reveal, Law, Concordance, Summation, SysTools Mail Pro+ etc.).


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of legal principles and practices at a level normally acquired through a four-year college degree or paralegal certificate.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of on-the-job experience in order to gain expertise needed to do substantive legal work.
  • Certified Specialist in E-Discovery (CEDS) is strongly preferred.
  • Existing knowledge of Electronic Discovery and Litigation Support environments and technology is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to draft legal memoranda and basic correspondence.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to 80% of the work time when evaluating legal matters.
  • Ability to develop and employ systems for organizing cases involving large number of documents.
  • Ability to proofread typed material for contextual, grammatical, typographical and spelling errors.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate and follow the instruction effectively from a diverse group of clients, attorneys and staff and provide information with ordinary courtesy and tact.

  • Work occasionally requires a high level of mental effort and strain while organizing and maintaining multiple cases.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment such as photocopiers, fax machines, personal computer, and typewriter.
  • Ability to retrieve and distribute print volumes, push and pull packages, books weighing up to 20 pounds and ability to retrieve and replace objects from shelves of up to 8 feet high.
  • Ability to travel to private and public buildings, locally and statewide, via private or public conveyance to assist attorney in attending to clients needs on legal matters.
  • Work occasionally requires more than 35 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position; may require irregular hours.


WORKING CONDITIONS: Normal office environment/non-smoking office. Schedule is hybrid with a minimum expectation of 2 days in the office per week.
