Job Summary:
Oversees medical services, policies and procedures; assists the agency in the delivery of high-quality hospice care to patients; assists the Executive Directors in the development, implementation and review of policies and in the supervision of the overall health care services of the agency. The Medical Director will serve as the medical resource for the Hospice Interdisciplinary Group.
Essential Functions:
• Assists the Hospice Executive Director in the development, implementation and review of policies and procedures and in supervising the overall health care services of the Hospice on a daily basis.
• Provides on-call, after hours coverage for the provision of professional medical consultations, including physician orders when necessary.
• Maintains an effective working relationship with the Hospice Executive Director and other physicians associated with the Hospice.
• Along with the IDG, the Medical Director assumes responsibility for the medical component of the hospice patient's care program on a regular basis.
• Serves as a consultant with the attending physician regarding pain and symptom management control as needed.
• Serves as an attending physician if designated by the patient/family. • In collaboration with the patient's attending physician, the Medical Director certifies terminal illness and patient eligibility for hospice services.
• Serves as the medical resource for the hospice's Interdisciplinary Group, supervising and coordinating all aspects of patient care including development, assessment, review, and updating of the hospice patient's Plan of Care.
• Represents the Hospice program and acts as a liaison regarding hospice care for hospitals, physicians, other health care providers, and community agencies. Services as a hospice clinical resource with external agencies, regulatory bodies, and physician referral sources.
• In addition to palliation and management of terminal illnesses and related conditions, the Medical Director will ensure that the general medical needs of each patient are met when not addressed by the attending physician.
• Maintains confidentiality of all patient information as established by the facility's policies and procedures.
• Assists the facilities in the development and implementation of quality assurance and utilization review protocols, programs, and procedures as needed, including the development and maintenance of patient care protocols and outcome improvement measures.
• Assists the facilities in the development and implementation of supply / drug formulary to ensure that services are utilized in the most cost-effective manner on a regular or as needed basis. Ensure correct drugs are being purchased and administered by staff.
• Recognizes the necessity for strict compliance with the requirements of third - party payers and intermediaries to obtain reimbursement for services provided. The Medical Director shall insure that all such requirements are fully met, to include assisting with documentation and other requirements for perfecting and securing favorable determination on appeals of denied claims, and when reasonably necessary, appearing at claims hearings.
• Provides supervisory oversight of Associate Medical Directors.
Job Qualifications:
• Have a current, unrestricted license for the practice of medicine in the state of practice and be knowledgeable about the medical and psychosocial aspects of hospice care.
• Board Certified in chosen specialty.
• In good standing with all applicable by-laws, rules, and regulations
