Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. We are currently seeking a Senior Accountant in the Finance department, reporting to the General Ledger Manager.

The role will reside in the Washington, DC office with hybrid work capabilities and will be responsible for design and preparation of monthly general ledger account analysis and reports. The Senior Accountant is expected to perform all responsibilities with a commitment to providing superior service to the Firm’s attorneys, advisors and staff, and maintaining an atmosphere of teamwork and continuous improvement. Above all, the Senior Accountant must fulfill the needs of the Firm in a manner which is consistent with the Firm’s Core Values.

Key responsibilities of this position include :

  • Assist in performance of day-to-day accounting operations, including monthly general ledger account analysis, bank reconciliations, posting journal entries. Maintain and balance subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, posting, and reconciling transactions and resolving discrepancies.
  • Participate in month-end closing activities, including posting of adjusting journal entries, review of general ledger analysis prepared by other members of the team.
  • Assist in communicating month-end results to senior management demonstrating strong analytical and presentation skills.
  • Maintain accurate records of firm’s fixed assets, including identifying depreciable assets according to firm’s capitalization policy, properly assigning depreciation method, recording transfers and disposals on regular basis, prepare and distribute monthly fixed assets reports for other internal departments.
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
  • Monitor outstanding checks and assist in the preparation of unclaimed property filings with various state agencies.
  • Review general ledger coding in the Chrome River invoice and expense workflow. Analyze monthly invoice and expense reports for trends and report on findings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications (Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in accounting and fixed asset software, experience with Aderant is preferred. Experience with MS Office; intermediate Excel skills are required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate potentially detailed and complex information to others
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and adjust to changing priorities in a professional manner
  • Ability to work independently and with a team
  • Willingness and ability to assume new tasks and responsibilities
  • Strong service orientation, and an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with users, peers, office and Firm management, and outside business partners
  • Ability to work well under pressure, facilitate solutions, and meet deadlines and milestones for projects assigned
