The Department of Emergency Medicine is committed to advancing clinical care, education and research to help patients with diverse emergency conditions. We offer patient-centered care, apply cutting edge skills to combat serious illness and injury. In addition, our physicians conduct innovative research aimed at preventing injury and disease.
Faculty members within the UCI School of Medicine are highly experienced clinicians who are devoted to training the next generation of emergency care physicians.
Some facts about the Department of Emergency Medicine:
- We handle nearly 50,000 patient visits during the course of the year.
- We are the entry point for Orange County‘s only Level I adult and Level II pediatric trauma centers and the Regional Burn Center.
- We care for nearly 5,000 trauma victims a year and more than 500 burn victims.
- We also receive patients en route to the UCI Health Comprehensive Stroke & Cerebrovascular Center, and Orange County‘s designated cardiac receiving center. Our specialists are standing by at all times to intervene and dissolve or remove the blood clots that cause heart attack and stroke.
- We have 20 full-time clinical faculty, two research faculty and eight full-time emergency medicine fellows.
The Department of Emergency Medicine is the only academic department in the nation that publishes a full-fledged scientific journal in Emergency Medicine. Started as the California Journal of EM in 2000, the editor-in-chief, Dr. Mark Langdorf, and managing associate editor, Dr. Shahram Lotfipour, revamped the journal in 2007 to reflect a unique niche of scholarship focusing on population health, public policy and advocacy, and systems of medical care. The Western Journal Emergency Medicine: Integrating Emergency Care with Population Health, is one of only two fully open-access, Medline indexed, emergency medicine journals in the world. The journal is sponsored by more than 60 academic departments of EM, and is the official journal of the California chapters of AAEM and ACEP, and the national American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians.
The Department of Emergency Medicine prides itself on being at the forefront of medical education. The monthly conferences utilize active learning principles to ensure engaging and effective didactics. Additionally, the department publishes the Journal of Education and Teaching in Emergency Medicine (JETem). JETem is an online, open access, peer-reviewed journal-repositiory for EM educators. JETem publishes ready-to-use didactics and accepts submissions of team-based learning, small group learning, simulation, podcasts, lectures, innovations, curricula, and submissions to our image bank. We believe it is important to allow educators to advance through the scholarship of their educational work. JETem gives educators the opportunity to publish and distribute outstanding, scholarly academic work so that it may be widely distributed, thereby increasing the significance of their results.
