Position Summary

The primary role of the Sports Development Manager is to serve as the main liaison for sports event organizers and local hotel partners and to implement sales and marketing efforts to identify, solicit, secure, and retain sporting events for the Baton Rouge area.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as the point of contact for hotels, facilities and/or booked and prospective sports events, including distribution of sales leads and event execution.
  • Identify, recruit and encourage local representatives affiliated with state, regional, national and/or international sports organizations to conduct future sports events and/or conventions in the Baton Rouge area.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date files on all contracted and prospective sports event groups in the client relationship management (CRM) system.
  • Work closely with the Marketing Department and the Destination Experience Department to ensure events are properly serviced to enhance the event attendees’ visit to the Baton Rouge area.
  • Serve as the point of contact for event services to sports groups, including but not limited to scheduling volunteer assistance, building event specific assets through available platforms and/or providing on-site assistance with planning and execution of events.
  • Maintain an inventory of local sports facilities while building working relationships with key stakeholders, including but not limited to attractions, service providers, dining options, venues, and facilities, in order to assist clients in decision making processes.
  • Assist in developing and implementing sales strategies to recruit and retain sporting events to the Baton Rouge area through regular personal, telephone and written correspondence to meet annual goals.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to potential incentives to finalize negotiations, tradeshows, familiarization tours, site inspections, purchases, entertainment, advising vendors and/or industry partners of tax exemption status, and other matters of significance.
  • Assist in preparing and presenting bid proposals, collateral and presentations for event organizers to secure sports bookings.
  • Work with the Senior Executive Vice President of Administration regarding the execution of cooperative endeavor agreements and contracts related to sports as needed.
  • Represent the Baton Rouge area at industry trade shows and/or sales missions.
  • Assist in developing and delivering verbal presentations to event stakeholders.
  • Assist in the implementation of department and organization events such as familiarization tours, site visits and designated meetings.
  • Represent Visit Baton Rouge at booked events in the region.
  • Attend relevant industry-related functions as requested.
  • Involvement in professional and/or civic organizations to enhance networking opportunities.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as assigned.


Position Qualifications and Requirements

• College degree or equivalent relevant experience

• Minimum of four years of sports experience or three years of sales experience preferred

• Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills

• Ability to work flexible hours including overnight travel

• Ability to set and meet multiple deadlines

• Exhibit flexibility and adaptability

• Working knowledge of the most current technologies and products used in the industry

• Possess valid driver's license, have reliable transportation and have sufficient motor vehicle liability insurance coverage

• Regularly required to talk or hear, see, sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers or feel, reach, bend, stoop, climb stairs, and lift up to 40 to 50 lbs. (The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the functions of the job.)
