PhD Student Position Available in Prof. Matthew J. Rau’s Lab -- The study of algal aggregation in the context of nutrients and pollutants transport, using a biophysical approach
Institution: George Washington University
Department: Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Location: Washington, DC, United States
Position Description:
At the Rau Lab, we study the transport of cohesive and biological particles, like phytoplankton, in multiphase flows. The Rau Lab is based in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the George Washington University and it is an incredibly interdisciplinary group involving fluid mechanics, interfacial physics, material science, phycology and oceanography. We carry out very peculiar laboratory experimentation focusing on both physical (i.e., shear stress) and biological factors (i.e., oxidative stress, metabolic switchers) controlling algal aggregation dynamics. Our aim is to answer some fundamental questions to better understand the ocean’s nutrient cycle and biological carbon pump. We are also interested in the role of fluid motion and microalgae extracellular substances in the transport of pollutants such as micro- and nano-plastics. We also carry out exciting field work. Check our website for more at
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD student to join our research team, with a flexible start date ranging from now and into the Spring of 2025. The successful candidate will work on multiple projects related to cohesiveness and self-aggregation in the marine environment, carry out both lab and field work to contribute to the publication of the results to scientific journals and conferences in the field of oceanography, environmental science and fluid dynamics.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research, develop new skills, and build a unique background.
The ideal candidate:
- Holds a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Oceanography or related subjects (Environmental Science, Biology, Microbiology, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Biological Engineering, etc.).
- Has strong background in biology and/or physics.
- Previous practical experience in a microbiology/plant lab, and coding (i.e. Python, MATLAB) are helpful but not mandatory.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Is highly motivated and proactive, able to work independently.
- Is also able to work collaboratively in large groups and willing to share knowledge with team members with different backgrounds.
Application Requirements:
- CV/Resume
- Cover Letter detailing your research interests and why you are interested in this position
- Transcripts of records
- Two academic letters of recommendations
- Previous publications if any
