Program Director, Internal Medicine Residency Program

The Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program is responsible for the leadership, organization, operation, and general administration of the Internal Medicine Residency Program sponsored by TriHealth. The Program Director establishes the strategic direction of the program and is responsible for the standards, quality and reputation of the program. The Program Director is expected to integrate the Internal Medicine Residency Program with physician practices and hospital clinical services in a manner that enhances value and quality and promotes an optimal environment for professional practice and medical education.
The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Organize and direct the Internal Medicine Residency Program at TriHealth, including the organization of rotations and other educational activities at all clinical sites that participate in the program. This includes ensuring the quality of didactic and clinical education in all sites that participate in the program.
- Dedicate no less than 50% (at least 20 hours per week) of total professional effort to the administrative and educational activities of the internal medicine educational program.
- Be available and accessible to residents at the primary teaching site(s).
- Oversee development of an effective resident advising program.
- Supervise any Internal Medicine subspecialty training programs sponsored by the institution and linked to the core program to ensure compliance with the ACGME accreditation standards
- Hold supervisory authority over all educational tracks in the Internal Medicine Residency Program.
- Ensure that the program does not place excessive reliance on residents for service as opposed to education.
- Maintain active clinical practice in Internal Medicine.
- Recruit and select candidates for the residency program through the National Residency Matching Program.
- Provide accurate statistical and narrative information in accordance with the requirements of the ACGME and the ACGME’s Review Committee for Internal Medicine. This includes but is not limited to the program application forms and annual program resident updates to the ADS and ensuring that the information submitted is accurate and complete.
- Submit reports on program, faculty, and fellow performance to the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) as requested by the Chair of the GMEC.
- Ensure the implementation of policies and procedures consistent with the institutional and program requirements, including but not limited to policies for resident duty hours and the working environment, moonlighting, grievance procedures, and due process, as established by the GMEC, and in compliance with the ACGME Institutional Requirements.
- Maintain current knowledge of the accreditation and operational requirements of the residency program, including monitoring current trends and anticipating changes. Maintain working knowledge of GME finance and reimbursement as it pertains to the internal medicine residency program and associated fellowship programs. Attend educational programs sponsored by the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine and other educational activities intended to maintain and improve the quality of the program.
- Prepare and send proposals to ACGME for approval of innovative educational approaches.
- Select qualified Internal Medicine physicians and other specialists to serve on the program faculty.
- Approve a local director at each participating site to be accountable for resident education. Organize the faculty to deliver a consistently high-quality education program. Evaluate the performance of faculty in meeting program objectives, including resident satisfaction with the program.
- Develop and implement programs to enhance the knowledge, clinical expertise, and teaching skills of the faculty.
- Assure that faculty meet research and scholarly activity requirements of the program, including active participation in the clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs, and research conferences in a manner that promotes a spirit of inquiry and scholarship.
- Prepare and implement the Internal Medicine Residency curriculum to provide a high-quality educational program and meet the requirements of the ACGME and the ABIM.
- Establish the clinical assignments and schedules of the residents to achieve the educational objectives of the program. Resident schedules and assignments for each resident in the program are expected to be established no later than June 1 for the upcoming academic year beginning July 1.
- Collaborate with the faculty to evaluate resident performance in relation to the educational objectives of the program and the ACGME’s milestones for Internal Medicine. The Program Director shall establish and maintain a Clinical Competency Committee in accordance with ACGME requirements and shall maintain appropriate documentation of the evaluation process in accordance with ACGME requirements.
- Make decisions, with faculty input, to promote residents to the next level of training in the program and decisions to graduate residents upon completion of the program. The Program Director is responsible for documenting completion of training and qualifications for each resident, as required by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
- Additionally, the Program Director is responsible for providing verification of residency education for all residents, including those who leave the program prior to completion.
- Ensure that residents are assigned clinical responsibilities appropriate for their level of training and level of knowledge and skill, are properly supervised in clinical assignments, and provide safe and effective patient care. The Program Director shall develop and maintain written supervision standards, requirements, and procedures in accordance with current ACGME requirements.
- Participate in the Graduate Medical Education Committee, and other hospital committees as requested by the DIO and the Department Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine. The Program Director shall serve as the Chair of the Internal Medicine Education Committee.
- Demonstrate scholarly activity as evidenced by activities such as peer-reviewed funding, publication of original research in a peer-reviewed journal, publication of review articles of chapters in textbooks, publication or presentation of case reports or clinical series at local, regional, or national professional and scientific society meetings.
- The Program Director is expected to participate regularly in clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs, and research conferences in a manner that promotes a spirit of inquiry and scholarship. The Program Director will demonstrate support for resident participation, as appropriate, in research and scholarly activities.
Qualifications
The program director must:
- Possess the required specialty expertise, as well as documented educational and administrative abilities, to carry out the responsibilities of the role and to achieve the goals and objectives of the program.
- Be certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine or hold credentials deemed equivalent to Certification by the ACGME’s Internal Medicine Residency Review Committee.
- Demonstrate clinical competence as a practicing physician.
- Have minimum of five years’ experience as teaching faculty in an ACGME accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program.
- At least three years of administrative experience in Graduate Medical Education.
- Must be appointed in good standing to the Bethesda North and/or Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Staff.
- Have unrestricted credentials within the Department of Internal Medicine of TriHealth and be licensed to practice medicine by the State of Ohio.
- Qualifications of the program director:
- Must include specialty expertise and at least three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience, or qualifications acceptable to the Review Committee.
Reporting Relationships:
- The Program Director reports to the Designated Institutional Official.
- The Program Coordinator(s) will co-report to the Administrative Director – GME and the Program Director.
- Core Faculty will report directly to the Program Director.
