SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE:

The DBI team specializes in the evaluation of damaged structures. DBI’s construction experts provide independent recommendations and analysis to clients in the insurance and legal industry. The Senior Building Envelope Consultant will focus on inspections for insurance related claims and litigation consulting. The incumbent will partner with additional DBI offices on an as needed basis regarding insurance related construction consulting. The Senior Building Envelope Consultant will work with the DBI professional engineers, registered architects, and registered envelope consultants to inspect buildings and create reports for local and out of state claims.


Occasional international travel may be required. This position will contribute to the rapid growth of the division by expanding the client network and seeking new construction opportunities.


PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead team on inspections of building facades, roofs, and waterproofing to determine cause of failures, damages, or defects for insurance related claims or litigation consulting.
  • Evaluates the quality of construction or reviews design or maintenance procedures and documents damaged property.
  • Participates in catastrophe responses such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, wildland fires, and earthquakes.
  • Research failure modes and code requirements as needed, prepare recommendations for repair and/or remediation as appropriate.
  • Prepares accurate, clear, thorough, and concise reports outlining the cause and origin of the damages to clients. Follows established policies, procedures, and processes in preparing information, exercising sound judgment in applying these to potentially unusual or complicated situations, and submits reports and documents in a timely manner and in accordance with the client’s standards and expectations.
  • Provides expert testimony in court of law if required.
  • Establishes trusted working relationships with clients and interacts socially at engagements with clients.
  • Familiar with all building envelope systems in order to determine appropriate repair recommendations.
  • Supervise and mentor Building Envelope Consultants new to the industry.
  • Participate in marketing and new business development.
  • Participate in one or more professional associations.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • A Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, Architectural Engineering or related field from an accredited university is required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE), Structural Engineer (SE), and/or Registered Architect is highly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of International Building Code (IBC) and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) code.
  • Ability to obtain and hold registrations in multiple states.
  • Recognized industry credentials such as, International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC), Registered Roof Consultant (RRC), Registered Waterproofing Consultant (RWC), and/or Registered Exterior Wall Consultant (REWC), Registered Building Enclosure Consultant (RBEC) are a plus.
  • Expertise in building structural systems, building envelope systems, water infiltration investigations, and building failure investigations.
  • Proficient in writing and editing of project specifications and technical reports.
  • Passion for and understanding of construction, as well as construction principles.
  • Experience working with legal and insurance companies is preferred.
  • Testimony/deposition experience.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced office setting, as well as in the field.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • The ability to be an effective team leader and maintain a professional demeanor.
  • Exemplary time management and organizational skills to execute tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in the field and to travel outside local area as workload and projects require.
  • Work collaboratively on multiple solution for clients and objectively summarize the benefits and shortfalls of each.
  • Great problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and various environmental conditions.
  • Ability to work in high areas such as roofs or scaffolding, requiring physical agility, balance, and resistance to acrophobia.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

Frequently requires work to be performed at the site of the property damage or loss, including locations where disasters or catastrophes have occurred; may require evening, overnight, and weekend travel and work; incumbent may be subject to outside weather and environmental conditions, including, but not limited to, extreme heat, cold, and precipitation; incumbent may be exposed to inside environmental conditions, including, but not limited to noise, vibrations, proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, heights, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.

The incumbent may be required to work in close quarters, crawl spaces, small enclosed rooms, narrow aisles, passageways, or other enclosed areas, requiring physical agility and resistance to claustrophobia. The incumbent may be required to work in high areas such as roofs or scaffolding, requiring physical agility, balance, and resistance to acrophobia.



PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

In addition to the working conditions and associated physical activities and requirements above, the incumbent may be required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, or feel, especially in the course of investigating and assessing property damage; these requirements may include the need to lift weights of up to 50 pounds, including a ladder.


The work requires close visual acuity, with or without correction, to prepare reports containing words, symbols, and numerical figures; the incumbent is required to view a computer terminal, use a keyboard, read printed documents, make detailed visual inspections, perceive color, perceive depth, and have a sufficient field of vision to carry out all inspection and related duties.


Willingness to travel on average of +/-30% of the workweek to accommodate meetings, as well as attend other work-related activities that may be scheduled outside of normal daytime business hours.
