Primary Function:

Under the direction of the Principal(s) and Director of Special Education, I provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them achieve their full potential—intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially. I develop or modify curricula, prepare lessons tailored to student ability levels, and work in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacities as assigned.

Responsibilities/Duties:

Instructional Strategies:

  • Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to develop IEPs through the ARD Committee process for each assigned student.
  • Implement instructional, therapeutic, or skill development programs and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Plan and utilize appropriate instructional strategies, materials, and equipment that reflect an understanding of the learning styles and needs of assigned students.
  • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula and assist special education students in regular classes.
  • Participate regularly in ARD Committee meetings.
  • Conduct assessments of student learning styles and use the results to plan instructional activities.
  • Present subject matter in accordance with guidelines established by IEPs.
  • Employ various instructional techniques and media to meet the individual needs and capabilities of each student.
  • Plan and supervise assignments for teacher aides and volunteers.
  • Integrate technology into the teaching/learning process, staying current with trends in educational technology.

Student Growth and Development:

  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as outlined in IEPs.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned, and sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students, supporting the mission of the school district.

Classroom Management and Organization:

  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, emotional, and social development of students.
  • Manage student behavior and administer discipline, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining students when necessary, according to IEP and safety standards.
  • Consult with classroom teachers on student behavior management according to IEPs.
  • Work with district and external resources to address the educational, social, medical, and personal needs of students.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assist in selecting books, equipment, and other instructional materials.

Communication:

  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication through conferences with students, parents, principals, and teachers.
  • Maintain professional relationships and work cooperatively with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

Professional Growth and Development:

  • Participate in staff development programs to improve job-related skills.
  • Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional improvement.

Policy Implementation:

  • Stay informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all required reports, records, and other documents.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervise assigned teacher aides.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Serve as a role model for all district staff.
  • Participate in approved professional development opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Special needs of students in assigned areas.
  • ARD Committee process and IEP goal setting and implementation.
  • Curriculum and instruction.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Methods of collecting and organizing data and information.
  • Operation of computers and assigned software.
  • District and department policies and procedures.
  • Relevant federal and state laws and requirements.

Education/Licenses/Experience:

  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for the assigned subject/level.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
  • At least one semester of student teaching or one year of approved internship.

  • Capable of managing multiple complex projects concurrently.
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Communicate effectively (verbally and in writing).
  • Coordinate district support functions.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

  • Lifting/carrying 15-44 pounds.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, pulling/pushing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, and prolonged use of computers.
  • Clear speaking abilities.
  • Occasional district-wide and state-wide travel.
  • Work occasional irregular hours and prolonged hours.
