Are you a subject matter expert on climate related risks to the energy sector and California’s energy transition policy? California Energy Commission (CEC) is hiring an Energy-Related Climate Research Manager for the Sustainability and Health (S&H) Unit within the Sustainability and Resilience branch of the Energy Research & Development Division (ERDD).


Our Energy Research & Development Division (ERDD) deploys over $300 million annually to advance technology innovation and research supporting the state’s clean energy and climate goals, including in the areas of renewable energy supply, building and industrial decarbonization, sustainable transportation, energy storage, energy distribution, resilience and reliability, and carbon management.


The Sustainability and Resilience Branch invests in projects and applied research that increase community energy resilience and reliability, accelerate food production decarbonization, and support California's transition to a climate-resilient, equitable, and sustainable zero-carbon energy system. The S&H Unit performs research to advance technologies and strategies that support a climate resilient energy sector; transition California's energy system to meet decarbonization, affordability, and equity objectives; quantify and mitigate energy-related impacts to human health and to the environment; quantify and reduce methane emissions from the energy sector; and contribute to California’s Climate Change Assessments.


Desirable Qualifications:

  • in climate and energy policy in California, including implementation strategies that support cost-effective, equitable decarbonization.
  • in scientifically informed strategies for managing climate-related risks to the energy sector, including but not limited to wildfire-related risks to investor-owned utilities.
  • to communicate effectively and relay complicated information in a simple, consumer-friendly manner.
  • research and analytical skills and ability to make well-supported recommendations for planning and decision-making.
  • to manage multiple projects, prioritize work activities, and deliver high-quality, timely work products.
  • to draft, review, and edit technical information for various audiences, including CEC leadership and the public.
  • interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • to work well as part of a team and perform independent tasks that contribute toward shared goals.
