Senior Chemist

Overview:

Under the direction of the VP of Global Product Development, the Sr. Chemist will create and develop global formulas for the Hair & Body categories, following briefs and delivering submissions in a timely manner as well as support technical and innovation research.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

Product Development:

• - Develop, identify new formulations and technologies, and modify existing ones for improved performance and/or cost reduction
• - Lead interactions with raw material labs
• - Identify and/or evaluate materials or technologies to assess technical performance
• - Prepare samples for evaluation and testing (ex: package compatibility, efficacy, safety, etc.) and provide on-going statuses
• - Provides appropriate information along with submissions (ex: formula with %, changes made, fragrance level, etc.)
• - Conduct stability testing and any other relevant lab tests for developed formulations
• - Identify process improvements with regard to routine lab testing
• - Effectively use project management techniques to drive projects to completion
• - Prepare specifications for raw materials and formulations
• - Support scale-up and pilot plant processing
• - Document projects through technology transfer documentation and project reports
• - Support patent or licensing applications and maintain confidentiality
• - Follow and support current Good Manufacturing Practices and current Good Laboratory Practices
• - Follow appropriate lab safety practices

Process Research:

• - Develops new processes for new or existing products
• - Designs experiments and protocols to ensure scalability and robustness of new and/or modified formulations and processes
• - Lead optimization of existing techniques, methods and processes and implement improvements
• - Maintain all aspects of the departmental lab and establish laboratory processes

Technical Liaison:

• - Develop and deliver technical communications to support product performance, off-label information and preservative system strategies to both internal and external partners
• - Assist in / prepare scientific presentations to colleagues, customers/end-users, technical, medical and trade conferences
• - Attend technical conferences / meetings and share relevant information that supports Moroccanoil initiatives with the team
• - Serve as a technical resource

Skills & Abilities:

• BS/BA in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physical chemistry or Organic chemistry, or similar applied science field required
• 5+ years relevant formulation experience in Haircare and Bodycare., with Haircolor as an optional/ bonus skillset
• Ability to troubleshoot and successfully resolve formulation issues.
• Adept at translating consumer insight and feedback into technical actions for formula optimization and innovation.
• Ability to communicate across the company using oral, written and electronic media.
• Ability to communicate with various groups such as Regulatory, Supply Chain, Procurement, Marketing and external suppliers (raw materials, services, equipment, contractors, etc.), vendors/suppliers and potential business technical partners.
• Work highly independently with minimum supervision using good judgment, involving supervisory approval as necessary.
• Able to manage and maintain a lab independently.
