REPORTS TO: Principal Investigator


We are the Neuroimaging Research for Veterans Center (NeRVe) at VA Boston Jamaica Plain. We work and support a wide array of research projects and grants that require a high level of computational and technological skillsets. Application of these skillsets will be used in a High-Performance Computing (HPC) environment along with machine learning to code and process large translational data sets. This will include both front and back-end development in Linux environments using SLURM. This also includes writing and optimizing scripts for novel research projects in languages such as Python and MATLAB along with creating algorithmic processing pipelines for systems such as Phillips PACS. The multi-disciplinary center consists of a highly talented group of biomedical researchers, clinicians, epidemiologists, biostatisticians,data analysts/programmers, projectcoordinators, and informatics team with academicaffiliations to Harvard Medical School and Boston University. We are looking for candidates with research-oriented mentality, high sense of ownership of the issues and ability to solve problems presented by data.


Job Description/Responsibilities

  • Provide coding expertise towards research projects and conduct analysis and maintenance of HPC systems, as well as Linux environments
  • Query electronic health record data to construct and clean large datasets
  • Work closely with study team made up of other statistical programmers, biostatisticians, clinicians, epidemiologists and other investigators to identify patient cohorts, create analytic datasets, conduct analyses, and deliver analysis results
  • Perform validation of programs and analytical datasets to ensure fulfillment of specifications and validity/integrity of results
  • Complete requests in a timely manner, meetingappropriate timelines, while ensuring qualitystandards met
  • Establish and maintaincommunication with study team to keep them updated on status of requests
  • Analyze, implement, developand/or enhance applications and interfaces for organization’s needs
  • Participate in the development and coordination of analytical activities
  • Work on multipleprojects and have to ability to manage the loads and times to been deadlines
  • Conduct data processing and data analysis
  • Help to manage project administrative procedures, including but not limited to the development of applications and providing follow-up for approvals and access to data sources
  • Assist in preparing reports, summaries, presentations, manuscripts and required reports, as well as following-up with fellow employees, ensuring that project milestones are being met.


Skills/Experience

  • Master’s Degree, preferably in, computer engineering, systems administration, biostatistics, computer science, or biomedical engineering, with 2+ years of database programming experience or statistical analyses
  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in biostatistics, computer science, or relevant engineering field with at least 3+ years of statistical or database programming experience
  • 2+ years of experience working with large-scale data servers or HPC
  • Capable of working independently in preparing datasets, writing analytic plans, perform analysis and writing reports to facilitate research decisions making.
  • Proficient programming skills using scripting language such as bash, Python, or MATLAB
  • Working knowledge of SLURM and statistical analysisor data analysis
  • Experience workingwith relational databases and/or electronic healthrecord data for research
  • Observational study or clinicaltrials research and analysis experience
  • Basic knowledge of studydesign, research methodology
  • Excellent attention to detail,logic, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Machine learning and understanding of the healthcare domain, clinical, epidemiology and/or genomic data is a plus



The employee must be a resident of Massachusetts upon start date.
