As a Park Ranger (Interpretation) (Backcountry - Kennel) incumbent you will be working for the Denali National Park and Preserve. Denali is six million acres of wild land, bisected by one ribbon of road. Travelers along it see the relatively low-elevation taiga forest give way to high alpine tundra and snowy mountains, culminating in North America's tallest peak, 20,310' Denali. Major Duties will include:

Facilitates strong team communication and leadership development within all team members. Delivers daily care, training, and long-term welfare for up to 32 sled dogs. Manages safety of a complex winter patrol operation and a very busy summer dog sled demonstration operation. Provides daily care and maintenance of the kennels campus, facilities and equipment. Facilitates continual training and skill development for staff, interns, and volunteers in winter and summer seasons. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. This is a career-ladder position, however, promotion to the full performance level is neither guaranteed nor implied and will be based solely on your ability to satisfactorily perform the work of the position, existing work at the higher grade level, and recommendation by the position's supervisor. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. Full-performance grade level is GS-09.

Incumbent will work with minors and needs a Childcare SAC background investigation.

Pay Information:

Pay is subject to annual review and adjustment.

GS-09 steps 1 to 10: $32.46 to $42.19 per hour + COLA

U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Complete the initial online assessment and USAHire Assessment, if required. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. Any individual who is currently holding, or has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet time-in-grade requirements (must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent in the Federal service); with few exceptions as outlined in 5 CFR 300.603(b). Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal civilian employees applying for reinstatement who have had a break in service of less than one year, as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointments. Time-in-grade does not apply to new excepted service appointments. Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. This position is subject to drug testing based on the collateral duty requiring firearms in the back-country or other locations for non-law enforcement reasons such as protection from animals. Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience . For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.

For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience includes activities such as: researching and conducting interpretative tours to point out scientific, historic, and natural features of parks, forests, historic sites, or other attractions; performing resource management tasks and duties supporting the mission of a park or similar area; providing visitor services such as explaining regulations, answering visitor questions and complaints, and providing information about a park or similar recreational area. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of one full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary to do the work of the position. Major studies include: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled.
