JOB SUMMARY: This position is located in Yellowstone National Park, in the division of Visitor and Resource Protection. THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IS BEING EXTENDED TO OCTOBER 15 MAJOR DUTIES: Position serves as the Deputy Chief Ranger, directly reporting to the Chief Ranger who leads the Visitor and Resource Protection Division of Yellowstone National Park. This is a large multi-level division that includes law enforcement, emergency services, structural fire, wildland fire, search and rescue, backcountry operations and management, fee collection, and permitting. The Deputy Chief Ranger is responsible for managing the visitor services office, structural fire program, emergency services program, search and rescue program and corrals program. Advises and makes recommendations to the Chief Ranger and Park Superintendent relating to improved utilization of staffing, equipment, and funds. Performs a wide range of supervisory functions including recruiting, hiring, training, and evaluating staff; planning, assigning and reviewing work; setting schedules and priorities; and directing the division safety program. Represents the NPS and the park on multi-agency, DOI and NPS workgroups and committees to achieve program goals. Physical Demands: Duties and responsibilities require long work days and extensive travel by all modes of transportation. The duties of the position may require considerable physical exertion, especially during emergencies. This position comes under the scope and requirements of the park's mandatory health end fitness program. Working Conditions: The employee works in a northern mountainous park with fluctuations in temperature from 100 degrees Fahrenheit In the summer to -50 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter. Snow depths during the winter may vary from two to eight feet. Elevation ranges from 5,000 to 11,000 feet. The emotional environment Is often one of high stress.
