The Office of the Attorney General’s Civil Division operates as a general-service law firm for the State of Kansas and its many constituent agencies. We provide legal advice as general counsel to agencies across state government. We represent State agencies, institutions of higher education, and employees sued in state and federal court for personal injuries, property damage, employment discrimination, and more. And we bring civil suits and administrative actions to enforce Kansas law across the state.

 The office is currently seeking an experienced attorney to join the Civil Division’s Legal Oversight and Government Counsel (LOGiC) section. Maturity, efficiency and a willingness to help others are essential to this position. The successful candidate will serve as general counsel to various state agencies, boards, and commissions. In addition to providing legal advice on personnel matters and open government compliance, this role often involves attending board/commission committee meetings, assisting boards in administrative hearings, and drafting orders as necessary. LOGiC attorneys also review and approve all of the state’s regulations and many State bonds, contracts, property transactions, and inter-local agreements, as well as research novel issues for the Office of the Attorney General.

Duties:  Providing general counsel services to state agencies, including KORA and KOMA compliance, contract review, advising on HR matters, and advising the agency in licensing and disciplinary matters. Aid agencies in the conduct of administrative hearings. Draft notices and orders for agency action. Review proposed administrative regulations and other matters for legality.

Qualifications

Licensing & Certification

Certificate of admission and membership in good standing with the Bar of the Supreme Court of Kansas or eligible for admission without examination. A valid driver’s license

Minimum Qualifications

At least two (2) years post-J.D. experience Prior experience or demonstrated interest in the Civil Division's mission and work

Preferred Qualifications

At least 5 years post-J.D. experience Prior in-house or general counsel experience Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements
