Helena, United States State of Montana Full time
Data Modeler-(24142086)

Why live in Helena, Montana?

Helena is surrounded by rolling hills and lofty mountains and is tucked below the Continental Divide. It is a relatively quiet place to call home where small-town living collides with outdoor adventure. Helena has a rich history and was originally founded as a gold camp during the Montana gold rush.

Why should you keep reading and consider working here?

We know you have other work options, but we ask you to consider working with us at the State of Montana Department of Administration. Our foundation of success is having effective working relationships, built on mutual trust and respect. We will challenge you to be the best you can be and will work hard to provide a work environment that allows you to succeed.

Established in June 2021, the Office of the Chief Data Officer was created to provide expertise and tools to drive the development and deployment of the enterprise data vision and strategies; oversee data management, data analytics, and data governance; ensure data quality, and recommend best practices in establishing agency performance measures. With nearly all agencies in Montana state government participating in initiatives involving the office, a new business analyst is being added to keep up with demand.

What is this career opportunity?

Our organization is looking for an experienced data modeler to help design and implement company databases. As a data modeler, you will collaborate with data architects and analysts to build data modelling solutions that streamline and support enterprise information management. You will oversee developing conceptual, logical, and physical data models and working with developers to implement Kimbal style data marts in Snowflake for our agency partners.

You will be joining a fun, fast-moving team that is working to change the data landscape within state government to enable data-driven decision making. This is a small team that reports directly to the CDO. In this role, you will get experience with modeling a wide variety of data from environmental and health to criminal justice and labor markets.

Specific responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

• Conduct requirements gathering activities with business process owners;
• Examine business processes and make recommendations for improvements;
• Create Entity Relationship Diagrams and determine how business entities are connected;
• Create logical data models in collaboration with database administrators;
• Work with analytics teams to create semantics models with metadata and lineage information;

To thrive in this role, you should have a natural analytical way of thinking and a particular affinity for data driven decision making to enhance business operations.

What are we looking for?

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or related Information Technology area; AND Substantive professional experience working with data modeling methodologies to enhance business operations; OR Alternate combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Competencies:

Knowledge of:

Business Intelligence products; Advanced SQL to query data; Data modeling methodology procedures; and Facilitation and dispute resolution methods.

Ability to:

Develop relational databases in a corporate context; Apply analytical, data profiling, and problem-solving to enhance business solutions; Build consensus among a diverse group of stakeholders; Function effectively in a dynamic team environment; Develop models for Business Intelligence solutions;\ Recommend and implement design and maintenance standards, guidelines and procedures; Manage a dynamic workload with regular shifting priorities; and Fully operate MS Office software products and learn new tools quickly
