GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Work involves providing spiritual guidance, crisis support, and assistance to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) employees, employees’ families, and victims and communities. Work under Victim and Employee Support Services (VESS) office under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.The following Military Occupational Specialty codes are generally applicable to this position. Applicants must fully complete the summary of experience to determine if minimum qualifications are met. ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Respond to critical incidents and/or disaster scenes at the direction of the VESS staff, Critical Incident Response Services members and authorized members of the DPS leadership. 2. Provide emotional support and spiritual care to DPS employees and their dependent family members upon request. 3. Visit sick or injured officers, departmental personnel, and family members in homes and hospitals. 4. Assist in making death notifications. 5. Provide assistance to crime victims upon request. 6. Serve as liaison with clergy and other community resources. 7. Offer invocations at special Department of Public Safety events. 8. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS: Education – As required by faith tradition. Experience – Three or more years in pastoral or parish/congregational ministry; congregational endorsement or recommendation within the individual’s respective faith tradition. Previous Law Enforcement experience as a peace officer is also required. Licensure and/or Certification – Valid driver license from state of residence. Organizational and Prioritization Skills – Ability to multi-task and effectively prioritize in a high-stress, fast-paced, multi-demand environment, and the ability to make sound work-related judgments and decisions. Ability to understand and effectively apply complex oral and written instructions and procedures. Presentation/Communication Skills – Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be comfortable speaking or presenting to various and diverse individuals. Ability to understand and effectively apply complex oral and written instructions and procedures. Ability to make quick and accurate judgment calls regarding the need to provide information and critical decisions. Interpersonal Skills – Must demonstrate an ability to exercise poise, tact, diplomacy and an ability to establish and maintain positive, working/professional relationships with internal/external customers. Ability to effectively and professionally provide direct service to primary and secondary victims of violent crime to include all ethnic groups, ages, gender, and persons with diverse lifestyles, backgrounds, and beliefs. Ability to assist in establishing and maintaining a professional and ethical tone in the workplace. Ability to address conflict in a direct and respectful manner. Research and Comprehension – Must demonstrate ability to quickly and efficiently access relevant information, and be able to utilize and/or present research and conclusions in a clear and concise manner. Confidentiality and Protected Information – Must demonstrate an ability to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations, and adhere to applicable laws/statutes/policies related to access, maintenance and dissemination of information. Technology (computers/hardware/software/operating systems) – Must possess appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems and be able to learn new software/systems. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook). Safety – Must be able to work and promote working in a safe manner at all times, avoiding shortcuts that have potential adverse results/risks, and must be able to comply with safety standards and best practices. Travel and/or Schedule – Availability to travel locally and/or statewide and work non-normal business hours as needed.
