Environmental Engineer - Energy and Sustainability

JKMuir is seeking a full-time Energy and Sustainability Specialist to join our team Fast paced and at the leading edge of technology and efficiency, JKMuir offers a team orientated, collaborative, and engaging environment where you are working directly with our clients on projects that make a difference. The preferred candidate will have at least 3 years of experience and a strong interest in technical analysis for carbon accounting, energy and greenhouse gas calculations, and integration of sustainability metrics into public infrastructure projects/heavy construction. We love data and details We are looking for excellent written and oral communication skills, and a willingness to be flexible, self-motivated, and comfortable performing independent work.

We are a small but growing team of engineers focused on sustainability and climate resilience for public infrastructure projects, including but not limited to water/wastewater facilities, transportation, and urban design. General responsibilities will include:

  • Support a broad range of projects with sustainability strategy, metrics, and reporting.
  • Modeling of facility energy usage, GHG emissions, life cycle carbon, construction materials and waste diversion through excel and other tools.
  • Develop detailed sustainability and Envision documentation materials for public infrastructure projects, including drinking water and wastewater facilities, transportation projects, and urban infrastructure.
  • Review engineering reports, design drawings, construction specifications and detailed construction cost estimates in order to develop calculations and documentation of energy usage, emissions, carbon, and sustainability sourced materials.
  • Create analytics and interactive dashboards using PowerBI and other tools.
  • Role may also include the support of energy evaluations, process system design and development of operation and maintenance (O&M) manuals for drinking water and wastewater facilities.
  • Successfully manage and deliver projects within schedule and on budget while meeting quality requirements.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively as a member of a project team to prepare technical analysis and reports for clients, and interface with clients and operations staff to obtain and review system operational information.
  • Work directly with clients to discuss projects/sustainability metric/operations/processes, and develop clear presentations of data and metrics for presentation to public officials, permitting agencies, regulators, and community groups.
  • Assist with preparation of proposal materials occasionally.


Required Skills & Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience in municipal water/wastewater, sustainability and/or climate resilience with respect to public infrastructure
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • Technical experience in the analysis of GHG, carbon, and/or energy usage.
  • Knowledge of water/wastewater systems and processes
  • Must be able to meet deadlines and perform tasks efficiently within assigned timeframes
  • Must have excellent MS Office computer skills and technical writing skills
  • Must be able to work independently as well as with a team
  • Must be comfortable engaging with clients
  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written)


Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Professional experience preparing NYC (or similar) sustainability deliverables including Climate Risk Assessment and Adaptation Plan, Sustainability Management Plan, Sustainable Material Content Plan, Construction Waste Estimate Report, and Energy Profile Report
  • Familiarity with the Envision certification process
  • Familiarity with embodied carbon and/or greenhouse gas accounting
