About the Role:

Were on the hunt for a highly skilled Finance Director to join our clients team at the City of Avon Lake. As the chief fiscal officer and contract administrator you will oversee financial records accounts and contract administration programs for the City. This key leadership role involves advising the Mayor and Council on budget preparation ensuring compliance with financial regulations and preparing essential financial documents. Your Mission:
  • Staff Management (20%): Manage and oversee staff by assigning work conducting performance evaluations and ensuring adherence to policies and procedures (staff management performance evaluation).
  • Accounting Oversight (20%): Direct accounting functions ensuring compliance with federal state and local laws and regulations (accounting oversight compliance).
  • Financial Reporting (20%): Review and audit internal financial reports general ledger entries and other documents to ensure accuracy (financial reporting auditing).
  • Budget Management (15%): Prepare submit and maintain the annual budget while evaluating revenue records and preparing forecasts (budget management forecasting).
  • Annual Reporting and Audit Preparation (15%): Prepare annual comprehensive financial reports (ACFR) and assist with audits (financial reporting audit preparation).
  • Tax and Asset Management (10%): Maintain accurate records of taxes assessments and city assets and manage relations with the County Auditor and bond counsel (tax management asset management).
Core Competencies:
  • Staff Leadership: Strong ability to manage train and evaluate staff while ensuring a safe and productive working environment.
  • Accounting & Compliance: Expertise in managing accounting functions ensuring compliance with all financial laws and regulations.
  • Financial Reporting & Budgeting: Proven ability to prepare accurate financial reports and manage municipal budgets.
  • Audit Preparation: Experience in preparing for and completing financial audits and responding to auditor queries.
What You Bring:
  • Bachelors degree in accounting finance administration public administration business administration or economics.
  • 10 years of administrative accounting experience including at least 5 years in government accounting.
  • State of Ohio CPA License preferred but not required.
  • Valid Ohio Drivers License or ID required.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP GASB principles and internal financial control practices.
Skills Required:
  • Financial Management: Expertise in managing financial operations including tax and asset management.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Experience in preparing managing and forecasting municipal budgets.
  • Audit Preparation: Ability to prepare and respond to comprehensive audits and financial reviews.
  • Staff Leadership: Ability to manage train and evaluate staff effectively.
  • Communication: Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with city officials auditors and staff.
Certifications:
  • State of Ohio CPA License Preferred but not required.
  • Valid Ohio Drivers License or ID Required.
Education:
  • Bachelors degree in accounting Finance Administration Public Administration Business Administration or Economics Required.
