Triangle Veterinary Referral Hospitals (TVRH) are the premier Emergency and Specialty Hospitals in the Triangle area TVRH is looking for a highly motivated and highly skilled Surgery Veterinary Technician Supervisor to encourage and develop our surgery team in Durham, NC. We provide 24-hour emergency and critical care services, and specialty referrals in surgery, internal medicine, cardiology, oncology, dermatology, neurology, radiology, and rehabilitation.

Job Summary

 

The Surgery Veterinary Technician Supervisor is responsible for the HR management of the surgery medical support team and the development and implementation of patient care processes for the surgery service. HR management duties include recruitment, performance management, scheduling, and training. The SVTS directs the flow of the technician team to promote efficient and effective completion of duties.  They are also responsible for providing the surgery technician team with the appropriate direction and motivation to enable their success.

General

 

• Collaborate with the management team regarding staff management vision and objectives

• Consult on patient processing protocols for the customer service team as it relates to the surgery team

 

Floor Responsibilities

 

• This position includes the duties listed in the Surgery Veterinary Technician Description

• Directly supervise surgery support team on the treatment floor providing strong, compassionate, and consistent leadership

• Direct surgery workflow on the floor to ensure adequate staffing to meet patient care needs

• Address any issues requiring immediate intervention regarding patient care or workflow that arise with surgery support staff 

 

Administrative

 

• Maintain surgery support staff schedule and on-call schedule

• Assure quality of patient care by developing and interpreting hospital standards of care in conjunction with the clinician and leadership teams

• Monitor team performance to ensure the highest level of patient care

• Maintain surgery medical support guidelines by writing, updating, and implementing/enforcing policies and procedures for equipment, patient processing and maintain a database of protocols

• Address medical support staff concerns

• Review surgery appointment schedule regularly to ensure appropriate appointment scheduling

• Conduct surgery department monthly meetings

• Develop and implement plans for accomplishing daily team goals, keeping all surgical team members on task and on schedule

• Ensure surgical department patient follow-up

• Maintain communication with other services 

• In conjunction with Hospital Purchasing Specialist and Surgery Inventory Ordering Assistant, oversee surgery purchasing and inventory

• In conjunction with Hospital Facilities Specialist, ensure proper maintenance of surgery equipment (maintain a contacts list and maintenance schedule)

• In conjunction with the Education and Training Coordinator, develop and implement a training program for new hires in the surgery department and ongoing training for existing employees

• Develop and update estimates for common surgical procedures

• Develop surgery forms (drop-off form, anesthesia consent, etc)

 

Human Resources

 

• Conduct candidate interviews and develop criteria and procedure for working interviews including written evaluation documentation

• Assist in surgery staff employee reviews

• Develop new employee training protocols

• Develop ongoing staff training protocols

• Address surgery support staff disciplinary and performance issues with the support of the HR Director

• Monitor surgery staff overtime hours to ensure appropriate allocation of hospital funds

 

Hospital Leadership

 

• Promote positive team culture

• Promote respect between all members of the team and doctors

• Promote an atmosphere that supports input and feedback from all team members

• Maintain a high level of confidentiality in terms of HR issues, client and patient information and hospital proprietary information

• Serve as management resource for the hospital as a whole when fellow supervisors or hospital administrator are out of the hospital and/or unreachable

 

Professional Requirements

 

• Adhere to dress code maintaining a neat and professional appearance 

• Complete annual CE requirements to maintain RVT in good standing in the state of North Carolina

• Represent the hospital in a positive and professional manner

 

Short Term Goals

 

• Develop technician protocols for most common surgical procedures

• Develop training protocols for new hires

 

Required Education and Experience

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent 
  • Associates degree in Veterinary Technology
  • Current RVT in NC
  • 2+ years of leadership experience
  • 5+ years of work experience as a veterinary technician in a Surgery/Anesthesia Service 

Preferred Education and Experience

  • VTS in Anesthesia
