Job Description:
Works in the Environmental Chemistry Unit as a Lead Technical Chemist utilizing Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS) to analyze Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This role includes responsibility for the quality and quantity of sample analysis, reviewing analytical data and reporting results and coordination of analytical and sample preparation activities. Works under minimal supervision of the Unit Director with considerable latitude for independent judgment. Develops training and guidance documents for the preparation, extraction, and moderately complex analysis of samples for LC/MS using approved methods. Ensures quality control (QC) measures required by the method and the standard operating procedure (SOP) are performed and documented accurately. Provides written and verbal guidance on complex chromatograms and spectral interpretation to determine the appropriate procedure for quantitation. Performs highly complex maintenance on equipment and required cleaning procedures for instrumentation and supplies. Consistently comply with DSHS Laboratory, local, state and federal guidelines to ensure a safe functioning laboratory. Maintains supplies, follows inventory procedures, properly disposes of wastes, and other duties as assigned. Performs method development and validation projects. Follows all HHSC and DSHS Policies and Procedures. Essential Job Functions:
EJF 1. Preparation and Analysis: Performs preparation and analysis of samples for PFAS by LC/MS. Checks samples for proper preservative and container, prepare reagents and standards, monitor expiration dates. Perform sample preparation techniques to meet Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Quality Manual requirements. Oversees preparation and/or analysis of quality control samples according to the SOP, including instrument calibrations and verification of standards with reference material and preparation of dilutions to meet the analytical range of the calibration curve. Develops data acquisition parameters for identification of target compounds. Identifies target compounds and interpret highly complex chromatograms and/or spectra. Determines appropriate procedure for quantitation. Monitors Quality Control Parameters as required by the method. Responds immediately to QC failures and effectively troubleshoots issues as they occur. Provides regular feedback on instrument QC challenges. (30%)
EJF 2. Instrument Validation / Method Implementation: This position will involve overseeing the setup, calibration and validation of LCMS instruments. Interact with instrument vendors to learn and document proper operation of the instruments. Optimize LCMS instruments and methods to meet criteria. Perform equipment maintenance, operational, and performance qualification procedures. Implement EPA methods .1 and . Perform procedures for method validation and performance verification. Integrate the latest scientific and technical guidance into laboratory operations. Perform a Demonstration of Capability. Determine the minimum detection limit (MDL) or limit of detection (LOD). Confirm the Limit of Quantitation (LOQ). Evaluate precision and bias. Evaluate selectivity of the method. Compiles results of method validation and performance verification. (30%)
EJF3. Data Management and Review: Reviews data results for accuracy. Ensure preparation and analysis of samples meet EPA holding time by tracking workflow and abiding by analysis deadlines. Performs data review and approval of results before expiration of holding times or assigned deadline. Informs Unit Director of deviations, concerns and issues when they are observed. Maintain thorough and accurate documentation of instrument setup, calibration, and maintenance activities. Prepare detailed reports on method development, validation, and troubleshooting activities for internal and external stakeholders. Follows all policies, procedures and guidelines of the Quality Manual, USEPA Drinking Water Certification Manual, The NELAC Institute (TNI), reference methods, and administrative, analytical and quality assurance Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). (10%)
EJF4. Policy and Program Development: Create SOPs for the operation, maintenance, and safe operation of LCMS instruments. Develop training sessions on techniques and best practices for LCMS analysis. Assists the Unit Director in interviewing future team members who will utilize the LC/MS equipment. Participate as a technical expert in construction or purchasing planning sessions. Act as a liaison between the lab and external partners to evaluate new LCMS technologies and methodologies. Stay current with advancements in LCMS technology and analytical chemistry. (10%)
EJF 5. Inventory Maintenance: Oversees maintenance of reagents and supplies by following laboratory procedures for inventory control. Enters requisitions for supplies and standards days in advance of need. Responsible for writing specifications for supplies and recommending equipment purchases for the team. Informs the Unit Director of any critical equipment or inventory problems. Coordinates supply receipt and verifies that the supplies meet procedure specifications. Maintains complete, timely and accurate records of maintenance and inventory. (5%)
EJF 6. Health and Safety / Housekeeping: Based on your work area, consistently comply with DSHS Laboratory, local, state and federal guidelines to ensure a safe functioning laboratory. Minimize exposure to chemical hazards by proper use of personal protective equipment, management practices, use of fume hoods and proper safety practices in the laboratory. Read and follow the Chemical Hygiene Plan and SOPs. Properly label all chemicals. Follow safety data sheet (SDS) recommendations. Wears safety glasses and lab coats at all times in designated areas. Properly identify, label, record and dispose of wastes and samples. Keep work area clean and organized to reduce contamination. Attend all required safety training. Communicate with others immediately any safety problems that arise. (5%)
EJF 7. Administrative: Abide by attendance policies. Notify Unit Director of all absences. Enters leave into CAPPS. Request or respond to external HR and IT service requests timely and completely. Perform required agency training. Respond timely to written requests for information. Perform other administrative duties as needed and as required by agency policy. (5%)
EJF 8. COOP: Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. (5%)
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Experience in operating Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS) systems. Skill of instrument validation and method implementation procedures and developing required documentation such as standard operating procedures (SOPs). Experience with data acquisition systems and skill in their use for preparing calibration curves for quantitation of samples, evaluation of QC parameters and producing reports. Experience performing and evaluating lab quality control and quality assurance activities. Experience with the interpretation of complex chromatograms & spectra, and evaluation of quality control data to produce valid results. Ability to set up computer spreadsheets to evaluate the recovery data and apply statistical means to set quality control limits.
