Your duties at a glance

As a Social Service Specialist 1, you will:

Respond to assigned referrals regarding alleged child abuse or neglect when a field assessment is necessary.  The CPS worker determines whether or not abuse or neglect has occurred, identifies child safety threats and develops protective actions and ongoing safety plans when children would be unsafe without intervention of the Agency.

What you need to qualify

A bachelor’s degree in Human Services or a field related to human service

 OR

A bachelor’s degree unrelated to Human Services and either:

1) One year of Human Services related experience; OR

2) Completion of coursework equivalent to certification consistent with Oregon Caseworker Competency

OR

An associate degree and either:

1) Two years of Human Services related experience; OR

2) One year of Human Services related experience and related training, coursework or certification consistent with Oregon Caseworker Competency

Essential attributes

We are looking for candidates with:

  • Experience using computer technology including, Microsoft Word and Outlook.

  • Experience mobilizing, engaging, and building collaborative relationships with community partners and people.

  • Experience writing documents or reports that include a conclusion and recommended action (examples: case plans, court reports, investigative reports)

  • Experience with crisis intervention or conflict resolution techniques. 

  •  Experience in making critical decisions amid dynamic and evolving circumstances and information.  

  • Experience working with an equitable and trauma-informed approach.

Working conditions

  • Your work will be conducted in the office and in the community. Some remote work may be approved but will need to be discussed with and approved by your manager.

  • You may interact with a wide range of people including some who have experienced trauma and may exhibit challenges in controlling their emotions, work with LEA in sometimes unsafe and unsanitary home environments.

  • This work requires a valid Oregon Driver’s license.  Work requires the ability to prioritize work related to child safety and respond quickly to emergent situations.

  • This position requires working a flexible schedule as a condition of employment with a normal workday of 8 hours from 8 AM to 5 PM; however, working hours may be adjusted within a given week to provide planned services.  Occasional compensated overtime during evening and weekend work may be required.
