Nature of Work

This in-person internship with Our Community’s Children -- a public/private partnership between the City of Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Public Schools and community partners – will provide opportunities to learn about civic engagement, leadership, youth development, college access and youth employment strategies. Interns will contribute to the design, implementation, and management of programs with the goal of improving the well-being of young people and their families. This position will not have any supervisory responsibilities. Work assignments will be conducted in office settings as well as locations within the community.

This is a program designed to experience a more in-depth look at local government service. Students will gain an understanding of career opportunities and the necessary qualifications required.
 
 Interns will be assigned and report to City staff. If necessary, agreements between the City and the educational institute will be coordinated by the assigned City staff member and the student intern. This experience will typically involve one department but may involve exposure to other departments and a general overview of City employment, including the interactions between various departments. The student will observe how concepts and techniques learned in the classroom are applied in the daily operations of an assigned department.

Position Details :
This is a 20 hour/week part-time, temporary intern position. There are no benefits associated with this position. Opportunities to extend the scheduled end date will be based on work performance and department needs will be decided at the discretion of the Executive Director.
 
 

Minimum Training and Experience

High school diploma or GED Good oral and written communication skills Commitment to an agreed upon schedule sufficient to complete assigned tasks Ability to courteously interact with City officials, employees, and citizens Must have reliable transportation to report to work assignments in office as well as off-site settings

Other Necessary Qualifications

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

May include:

Providing assistance in support of assigned projects Assembling, collecting, and analyzing data Scheduling and attending staff meetings Answering phones, filing, providing customer service Reviewing relevant work materials, City website, intranet, etc. Create and update social networking sites/blogs  Revise and update databases  Serve as a chaperone and co-facilitator for various youth program activities  Provide technical assistance in the areas of cover letter and resume writing, interviewing, and workplace etiquette  Plan summer melt activities with OCC’s T2C Studio: Grand Rapids Center for College Success  Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios  Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries  Attend events or programs outside of normally scheduled work assignment with advanced notice  Post on several social media platforms, update websites, and navigate through data management platforms Speak publicly in front of 50 to 200 young people at a time Assist in developing and preparing promotional materials for public and internal use Prepare correspondence relating to assigned area of activity  Conduct various research projects or special assignments  Perform a variety of other related tasks

COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIES
Student interns will be evaluated by assigned staff in relation to the completion, quality, and timeliness of assigned projects. In addition, the evaluation will reflect the general abilities of the intern in the fulfillment of assigned tasks. Interns will be required to complete an evaluation form describing their internship experience, including any suggestions for program improvement.
