Do you like to stay busy and enjoy the great outdoors? If so, you may want to apply for the Insect Survey Laborer position with the Plant Protection & Conservation Program Area, we have multiple positions available.

What you’ll be doing

  • As an Insect Survey Laborer, you will primarily focus on placing, maintaining, and checking insect traps. You will typically spend the entire day outside, driving and navigating with paper and electronic maps, working in inclement weather, and walking upwards of eight miles a day. This position has frequent interaction with the public, residents, landowners, grounds keepers, knocks on doors, and places door hangers to request permission to place traps. This position also maintains public relations, answers questions, and educates the public on the Japanese beetle eradication project and other pest survey programs.

  • You will need to keep an accurate account of all traps and information including precise trap location, servicing dates, removal dates, hosts surveyed, pest detection made, and you will enter trap placement data through software on a state issued iPhone. Overnight travel may occur to help place traps throughout the territory or for assistance in another field office.

  • The Insect Survey Laborer is a seasonal full-time position, that covers multiple areas in Oregon. Some of the locations are with the Portland field office territory, within Clatsop, Tillamook, Hood River, Washington, Clackamas, and Multnomah Counties. The Southern Oregon field office has openings in Jackson, Josephine, Douglas, Lane, Marion/Polk, Coos or Curry Counties. There is also a central Oregon opening in Deschutes County (specifically the city of Bend).

  • This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified applicants to fill the current vacancies. This position will start April 15, 2024, and the season is anticipated to conclude October 10, 2024.

Note The salary range for this position will be truncated as of April 1, 2024, which will impact the minimum salary for this classification. The new salary range on April 1, 2024 will be $3,218-$3,776 monthly.

Working conditions

  • Work outdoors, at times during inclement weather

  • Must be able to walk upwards of 5-8 miles a day.

  • Operate assigned state vehicle.

  • Must display a good sense of diplomacy when dealing with the public.

  • Able to navigate using paper and electronic maps and plan efficient daily work routes.

  • May need to cold call landowners, industry professionals, and other entities to conduct work with eradication and biological control teams or secure trap locations on private properties.

  • May be required to pass a background check and/or complete specialized safety and access training for specific work sites, such as access to secured locations in the territory.

What we’re looking for:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
