Nature of Work

The purpose of this job is to perform inspections for compliance with Municipal, State, and National codes and identify defects and potential hazards. Performs residential and commercial electrical inspections. Consults with engineers, architects, developers, contractors, owners, and the general public. Inspects complicated institutional and commercial projects. Leads, trains, advises and assists staff with questions and major projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

Conducts inspections of large industrial, residential and commercial electrical systems to assure compliance with municipal and national electrical codes and to identify defects in building wiring systems Investigates electrical fires and electrical system complaints; consults with fire department on questionable fires; handles complaints of hazardous services with power and utility companies Consults with engineers, electricians, developers, contractors, and owners regarding the provisions of the electrical codes, ordinances, laws, and design criteria and requirements; works with building and housing inspectors on final inspections, problems, and permits Revises electrical ordinances; maintains records and prepares reports on electrical inspection activities; writes violation letters to order owners to repair or replace electrical systems; authorizes power disconnection in the event of non-compliance; issues permits, corrective orders and writes violation notices Assists in preparation of and approves journey-level, master electrician and contractor examinations; oversees licensing testing procedures Makes recommendations for procedural and code changes; provides instruction to city employees and electrical trades workers on updates of electrical code; interprets codes and construction details Answers questions from the public, realtors, contractors, and builders Represents City at electrical conferences Performs related work as required

Minimum Training and Experience

High School diploma --AND--
At least six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in the electrical trade including two years supervisory or code enforcement experience --OR--
Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities Required Licenses or Certifications
Electrical Journeyman License State Electrical Inspector  Plans Examiner Registration

Other Necessary Qualifications

Knowledge of:

National Electrical Code, Michigan Electrical Code, International Electrical Code, United Laboratory Standards, and city of Grand Rapids ordinances The principles and practices of electrical systems and wiring, including specialized wiring systems The methods, materials, and techniques used in the construction of electrical systems Principles and practices of basic bookkeeping Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment Skill in:
Problem-solving  Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships  Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature Ability to:
Write and revise electrical ordinances Maintain records and prepare reports Inspect work being performed and to determine adherence to code Review, read and interpret electrical system codes, construction details, and plans Enforce code Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing Meet schedules and deadlines of the work Understand and carry out oral and written directions Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries
