Our client, a leading global renewable energy company, is looking for a Director of Development. This role supports a dynamic organization focused on sustainable solutions and renewable energy expertise.

Position Overview:
The Director of Development will play a crucial role in a fast-paced setting, driving the identification and acquisition of new development sites for solar, wind, and energy storage projects. Responsibilities include negotiating land agreements, managing interconnection requests, evaluating project feasibility, and exploring project acquisitions and strategic partnerships.

Location: Chicago, Illinois

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead market analysis and site selection for greenfield development, assessing constraints, feasibility, project viability, and offtake potential.
  • Negotiate real estate agreements and maintain relationships with landowners, demonstrating an ability to assemble large-scale utility real estate.
  • Manage environmental assessment campaigns and coordinate with external consultants.
  • Oversee project permitting, development agreements, and tax abatement activities.
  • Direct resource management campaigns and energy production estimates for wind, solar, and BESS projects in collaboration with external consultants and the Performance Engineering team.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders and consultants to manage the electrical interconnection process, understanding its impact on asset viability.
  • Work with internal technical services, including legal, power marketing, engineering, and government affairs, to ensure successful project development.
  • Assess the financial viability of projects in collaboration with the corporate finance department.
  • Facilitate the preparation of RFP responses.
  • Prepare and manage project budgets and schedules.
  • Identify and facilitate project acquisitions.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (engineering concentration preferred), MBA a strong plus.
  • 7-10 years of experience in energy project development, ideally in solar, wind, BESS, or natural gas electricity generation projects.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the development process for major power projects, particularly pre-construction engineering for large-scale wind assets.
  • Proven ability to engage with local communities, negotiate with utilities, and successfully negotiate with landowners and other stakeholders.
  • Experience in US power markets, utilities, interconnection issues, and Power Purchase Agreements.
  • Strong technical understanding of power projects.
  • Exceptional project management skills with a highly organized approach.
