The Certified Recreational Therapist position is responsible for developing and coordinating age-appropriate recreational therapy services to patients admitted for long term hospitalization. Duties include developing meaningful individual and group therapeutical activities to stimulate patient interests, observing and reporting on patient’s development, maintaining inventory lists, and making a semi-annual report to our governing body. This position may require alternative work hours, other than 8:00am to 5:00pm, including weekends and holidays, as needed for special activities.
This position is located at the Texas Center for Infectious Disease (TCID) in San Antonio, Texas. TCID is a public health facility designed to provide patient care, scientific investigation, and therapeutic and educational services in support of public health needs. Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
(55%) Program Coordinator
Prepares, coordinates, and distributes materials to patients, instruct patients in recreational therapy activities, assists patients to identify and develop their recreational interests, and closely observes and reports significant changes in patient’s psychosocial development. Maintains inventory lists and makes a semi-annual report to our Governing Body.
(35%) Therapeutic Activity Planning
Plans and performs age-appropriate recreational activities for patients according to their needs to accomplish the objective of the programs.
(10%) Other Duties as Assigned
May drive state owned vehicle to activities as needed. May serve as chaperone for patients at community functions. Responsible for his/her continuing education.
Other Duties as assigned may also include actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligation for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Knowledge Skills Abilities:
• Knowledge of various activities used in recreational therapy and/or theories in practices of play, planning games, direction of group activities.
• Knowledge of approved methods of instructing, handling, and supervising patients in various categories of therapeutic activities.
• Knowledge of age-appropriate therapeutic activities and interests relevant to young adults, adults, and geriatric patients.
• Skill in computers and computer software including Excel and Word.
• Skill in the use of equipment, materials, and tools used in therapeutical and recreational activities.
• Ability to teach skills in a therapeutic environment and relate well to a diverse group of patients in a supportive manner.
