Summary

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Duties

The purpose of this position is to lead staff in the safe mitigation of tree hazards, while providing for public safety, protection of property and preservation of the natural and cultural resources within Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

This position performs the most difficult and complex Tree Worker duties at the journey level with a high degree of independence. Performs hazard tree identification, tree climbing to heights up to 100 feet, tree pruning, tree hazard reduction or tree removal. Install complex multi-point rigging systems while tree climbing, working from aerial lift trucks or at ground level. Selects compatible rigging gear for weights being applied. Fall trees up to 8 feet in diameter and up to 200 feet in height. Operates chain saws with up to 72-inch guide bars. Fall trees of all species, sizes and complexity to predetermined direction. Operates heavy equipment such as dozers, excavators, graders, loaders and rollers. Fills in as a snowplow operator. Operates 33,000-pound GVW 60-foot Aerial Boom Truck and Cat 924 Log Loader/Skidder. This position leads a crew of semi-skilled workers in safe mitigation of tree hazard operations.

Career-Seasonal positions are subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee is estimated be in a non-pay/non-duty status from mid-November until late-November.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks represent an extraordinary continuum of ecosystems (96% designated wilderness) arrayed along the greatest vertical relief (1,370 to 14,505 feet elevation) of any protected area in the lower 48 states. They are the highest, most rugged reaches of the Sierra Nevada Mountains (including Mount Whitney at 14,500 feet elevation) and feature the world's largest trees - Giant Sequoias. Sequoia National Park is the nation's second oldest national park (established September 25, 1890) and encompasses 404,863 acres. Kings Canyon was established on March 4, 1940 and encompasses 458,847 acres. Both parks provide a wealth of recreational opportunities via 835 miles of trails, wild and scenic rivers, alpine lakes, and caves, along with a full range of overnight lodging prospects to choose from that include 14 campgrounds. Air Quality: Poor air quality afflicts Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, especially during summer months - generally May to October. High ozone levels may be the most harmful pollutant here.
