Iowa City, United States Engie Full time
What You Can Expect

As a Utility Plant Operator III (UPO III) at our University of Iowa location, you will be responsible for safely and efficiently operating power generation equipment that powers campus facilities, including the University Hospital. This equipment includes turbine generators, boilers, pumps, air compressors, conveying systems, fans, electric motors, ash conveying systems, control valves, and mobile equipment.

Each day begins with a handoff from the previous shift to understand the current operating status of the plant and tasks to be completed. The primary task of a UPO III involves the safe operation of the plant's turbines. You will conduct hourly rounds, monitoring pressures, checking for leaks or abnormalities, and starting and stopping turbines as needed. Additional responsibilities include monitoring pressure reducing valves, completing logs at the end of the shift, and performing weekly preventive maintenance (PM) during day shifts. We currently operate three steam generators and four natural gas-powered generators. Communication of pertinent information among shift members, production support personnel, maintenance, and management is facilitated through Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Maximo (our Computerized Maintenance Management System).

The UPO III may also provide relief and support in other job classifications, including Maintenance and Fuel Unloading. Other duties include performing regular testing and treatment of boiler water as directed and checking offsite equipment such as the Hospital boiler and West Campus boiler.

This position follows a rotating shift schedule, rotating between days and nights every two weeks. You will work seven scheduled days every fourteen days (Dupont rotating schedule), including nights, holidays, and weekends. Availability for vacation coverage, emergency relief, and overtime as required by the plant management team is essential.

What You'll Bring
  • A High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in which you gained expertise operating boilers, pumps, fans, conveyors, or similar equipment in an industrial, process plant, or ship or shore-based power plant setting
  • Two (2) years of experience operating solid fuel and/or gas/oil-fired water tube boilers, turbine generators, and related plant equipment

Additional Details
  • Daily attendance at the worksite is required
  • Must comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies
  • Must possess a valid state issued driver's license with a clean driving record, as operation of company vehicles is required
  • Must be physically capable of hearing and understanding audible alarms, detecting changes in noise levels, and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Capable of performing various physical tasks, including standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and lifting
  • Must have corrected eyesight at 20/40 to accurately read instruments, gauges, and manuals
  • Physically capable of entering and working in confined spaces and wearing PPE, including half and full-face respirators, fall protection equipment, hardhat, and safety shoes
