Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary: This permanent, unclassified, full-time position is in the Public Affairs Section. The physical location of this position will be the Office of the Secretary in Topeka, the Kansas City District Office, or the Wichita Regional Office, dependent upon the successful candidate and subject to prior approval by the Department Secretary. The Chief of Public Affairs reports directly to Christopher Kennedy, Department Secretary and is responsible for:

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Planning, developing, and implementing a comprehensive marketing and communications plan that supports KDWP’s mission, vision, strategic direction, programs, policies and services. Analyzing and interpreting the effectiveness of KDWP’s marketing and communications activities. Developing metrics and recommendations that continuously achieve KDWP’s public affairs objectives in an authentic, timely, and meaningful manner. Serving as a trusted advisor to the Secretary and senior agency officials. Serving as the PIO and primary agency liaison to the Kansas Governor’s Office. Building mutually beneficial relationships with agency experts, external constituencies, nongovernmental organizations, and members of the media to identify emerging issues and opportunities. Piloting strategies and tactics that strengthen the aforementioned relationships and increase advocacy, while protecting and enhancing KDWP’s reputation. Serving on select KDWP committees and task forces, as deemed appropriate or necessary by the Department Secretary. Serving as Executive Editor of “Kansas Wildlife & Parks Magazine.” Special projects, as assigned by the Department Secretary.

Qualifications

Education : Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Licensing & Certification : The successful candidate must pass a background check and possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Minimum Qualifications : Two years of experience in planning, organizing, and directing the work of a department, program or agency. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Preferred Qualifications : Preference will be given to candidates with a Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism or related field.

Additional Qualifications/Skills/Abilities : Exemplary oral and written communication skills. Incumbent must be tech-savvy, knowledgeable of emerging technologies related to digital and social media and have familiarity with current graphic design and project management softwares (i.e. Canva, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Teams, Asana, etc.). A knowledge of AP-style is preferred. A high degree of professionalism, discretion, and a willingness to stay abreast of current natural resource conservation issues are necessary for the success of this role.
