Job Summary
AECOM is actively seeking a highly talented, self-driven and motivated Roadway/ Highway Design Engineer for immediate employment in our Virginia Beach, VA office. This position requires technical excellence in the field of roadway/ highway design engineering, modeling, and planning. The candidate must have a solid understanding and experience of various aspects of roadway/ highway design methodologies and procedures. As an engineer and modeler in the highway department, candidate will work on regional and national surface transportation projects on a variety of tasks in the field of roadway and highway design, planning, and modeling.

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to
  • Performing engineering, planning, and modeling efforts for all areas of roadway and highway design projects.
  • Collaborating with other engineers, planners, and modelers to research, analyze, or resolve complex transportation analyses or design issues.
  • Assisting in the engineering and planning effort for roadway and highway design, maintenance of traffic, and safety projects including following the agency's plan development process.
  • Guiding/ mentoring junior engineers and provide QA/QC for projects in various areas of highway design, analysis, and simulation.
  • Interacting and coordinate regularly with clients and sub consultants in the various assignments
  • Understanding trends, best practices, and innovation in the transportation industry and explore opportunities of implementing them on projects.
  • Assisting with business development activities in providing responses to RFP, RFQ, and SOQ including technical writing, and scope and fee development.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil/ transportation engineering or equivalent
  • 8+ years of industry experience in the highway design, analysis, and modeling or equivalency of experience or education.
  • PE license in VA or reciprocal is required or ability to obtain one within 6 months
  • Valid Drivers License
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficient with MicroStation, OpenRoads and MS Office Suite
  • Experience with AutoCAD, and GuideSIGN.
  • Thorough understanding of VDOT highway design guidelines/ procedures/ plan preparation / and cost estimation.
  • Thorough understanding of VDOT work area protection manual and ability to be VDOT certified.
  • Experience with local Hampton Roads municipalities, VDOT and approving agencies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, good time management skills, a strong work ethic, attention to detail and a strong desire to learn.
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplines team environment.
