About the program

The Self Sufficiency Programs Mission is: To provide a safety net, family stability and a connection to careers that guide Oregonians out of poverty. The Self Sufficiency offices help administer program benefits such as food benefits (SNAP), cash for families (TANF), childcare assistance (ERDC), medical programs, refugee services, and domestic violence services.

Your duties at a glance

As an Operations Support Staff (Human Service Specialist 1), you will:

  • Explain agency notices, case, and benefit issuance information as requested by Oregonians.
  • Provide referrals and information for additional services and community resources.
  • Write clear and concise case notes to summarize information gathered from applicant(s) and collateral sources.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Work within a team that collaboratively rotates tasks to support the business needs of the office.

Minimum qualifications

  • Two years of experience either interviewing to obtain personal or technical information or substantial people contact. This experience must have involved a high volume of paperwork (e.g., assuring information on forms is complete and accurate, completing necessary documents, etc.).
  • College-level courses may be substituted for the experience on a year-for-year basis.

  • Commitment to team: Demonstrated ability to develop relationships that establish trust, approachability and flexibility and thrive in a team environment where inclusivity and respect of others’ ideas and contributions are welcomed.
  • Computer skills: Adept in usage and functionality of computers, web browsers, and Microsoft programs.

Working conditions

  • The work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8am-5pm at SSP Delivery | D03 | SFO | Salem - 25th Ave | Unit A – DHS/ 4600 25th Ave NE Suite 110 Salem OR 97301
  • Contact with the public, including contact with Oregonians experiencing emotional and financial stress.
  • Serve a diverse range of customers with compassion and professionalism through a trauma informed lens.
  • Will require sitting at a computer or telephone for prolonged periods of the workday.
  • Experience high volume of computer work, using various computer programs in a fast-paced environment.
  • Priorities and procedures may change daily and require the ability to be flexible in application of procedures. 
  • A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record are required for this position.

  • The Oregon Department of Human Services does not offer visa sponsorship.
