The position (K0236794)

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has an Environmental Specialist opening in Topeka. This position will work as the project manager for complex resources damage (NRD) assessments and evaluations.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Provides state oversight at contaminated sites for state resources. Reviews biological assessment documents and reports for surface water, groundwater, biological, and terrestrial resources. Prepares comments and appropriate correspondence. Performs valuation studies to help calculate natural resource losses and the sizing of potential restoration projects or options for the state trustee. Supports the state trustee and legal staff during negotiations with potential responsible parties.

Reviews and evaluates assessment reports and natural resource restoration plans, operation and maintenance reports, and other technical documents for completeness, accuracy and technical adequacy. Works with KDHE staff to prepare evaluation comments and appropriate correspondence for environmental contractors. Meets with industry, consultants, governmental representatives and other KDHE bureaus and staff to discuss technical issues and site actions. Writes technical and public relation documents as required. Prepares material and gives presentations at public meetings and availability sessions.

Qualifications

Education : Bachelor's degree in environmental, agricultural or natural sciences/resources. Licensing & Certification: Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in environmental, agricultural or natural sciences/resources. Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in environmental, agricultural or natural sciences/resources. One year experience in a field of environmental/agricultural sciences or natural sciences/resources. Effective written and oral communication skills. Strong organizational and time management skills. Advanced knowledge and experience in biological stream assessments, wetland restoration, and resources. ArcGIS. Proofreading, editing, attention to detail. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access. Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Within the probationary period, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear.
