Department Summary
The First Generation Success Center is the University primary provided of engagement and support initiatives for UNT's first-generation student population. Then Center was established in 2021 and helped the University receive the national designation as a First-Gen Forward (NASPA) institution for services and support programs targeted towards the first-generation student population. On average, 40% of the University's student population identifies as first-generation. The Center is housed under the department of the Center for Belonging and Engagement.
Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated, proactive, and enthusiastic individual to lead the First Generation Success Center team. In this role, this position is primarily responsible for management and coordination of operations for the University's First Generation Success Center and Emerald Eagle Scholars Program. This position will possess a high level of understanding of the first-generation student experience, support programming and relative trends. Responsibilities include: develop and implement strategies relative to retention, data reporting, budget management, grant management, presentations and training, and supervision of full-time and student staff. This position will report to and work directly with the Director of the Center for Belonging and Engagement.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and 5 years' of experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Director must have understanding of first generation, low income, and other student populations that have typically needed additional support. General knowledge of financial aid, and the ability to connect with students and families is critical to success.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in college student personnel, higher education, counseling or related field.
Grant writing experience.
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Job Duties:
- Provides effective leadership in all aspects of the First Generation Success Center including planning, development, implementation, promotion, logistical support of program activities including the Emerald Eagle Scholars (UNT's Tuition Guarantee program), management of departmental strategic and assessment plan, and development of center and student learning goals.
- Provides direct supervision to 2 full-time staff, and indirectly to 1 part-time staff, 3 graduate assistants, and several student assistants.
- Develops and sustains cooperative relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community partners, Student Affairs, and other University assistants.
- Allocates and manages departmental budget and external funding opportunities.
- Educates the campus on the needs and experiences of the first-generation students and seeks to inform processes to ensure the success of this population.
