General Statement

Under general supervision, has charge of carpentry activities involved in the construction, alteration and repair of buildings, structures and articles of wood or wood substitute material.

Essential Job Functions

Supervises carpentry activities throughout the District; plans and schedules projects; gives advice and instructions regarding work in process; inspects jobs in progress and upon completion to make sure that instructions and work schedules are followed. Cooperates with other supervisory personnel in order to coordinate carpentry activities with other operating and maintenance work. Is responsible for the proper use and care of tools, equipment and materials used in connection with carpentry work. Checks adherence to safety rules and practices, administers first aid in case of injury and secures prompt medical attention when necessary. Studies and interprets blueprints, sketches, written or verbal orders, or other means of direction. Requisitions tools, equipment, supplies and/or materials from the storeroom.

Other Job Functions

Reviews and codes timesheets, electronic time off requests and maintains vacation schedules online. Consults with other District personnel to determine job requirements and schedules. Performs any of the duties of a Carpenter as required. Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors. May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Extensive knowledge of the carpentry trade. Extensive knowledge of the types, uses and adaptabilities of various woods. Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment of carpentry. Basic computer skills. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to work from sketches and blueprints and to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to plan, schedule and coordinate diverse carpentry projects. Ability to coordinate the work of several crews in different locations.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Two years of experience as a Carpenter Leadman.

Promotional Requirement

One year of service with the District as a Carpenter Leadman or two years’ service as a Carpenter. Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
